Need of a Teacher

Hey all,

Just wondering if there are any Uilleann Pipe teachers in Chicago.
I have only been playing for a year now and a teacher would greatly help.

Thanks

You should have no problem! Chicago is a great spot for music! Try to get in touch with Kieran O’Hare.

I take it you don’t reside in Mali, West Africa anymore.

Most of the pipers here in Chicago lead very busy lives and have almost no time to teach, but we can offer the odd pointer or help with a tune.

Here’s what I would suggest:

Try getting stuck into the scene - and I don’t mean hanging out on the sidelines or sitting in the middle of a high-level session with your pipes in your lap feeling useless (been there, done that, bought the T-shirt).

Instead, I recommend that you try playing whistle or flute at student-friendly sessions in order to pick up the local repertoire. WEEKLY PARTICIPATION AND FREQUENT, CONSISTENT PRACTICE IS NOT OPTIONAL. Sorry for yelling  When you learn a tune on the whistle or the flute, try it on the pipes after a few weeks. If you’re having trouble getting your pipes to cooperate, ask one of the local guys for help.

This will help your ear, build your repertoire, get you stuck into a living tradition, and improve your sense of rhythm. PM me for suggestions if you’re interested.

In an attempt to cut through the ‘hedges’ as it were, get in touch with Mr. Cannady straight away… he’s a humble fellow, but he is also a very talented musician, and a piper of good and pleasant taste!

Thanks!!

Sadly I am still in Mali, but will then be in Chicago for a few months. Just wanted to know in advance.
How would I get in touch with these people?
I have been playing whistle for a few years, so that would help in a Session if I were to go to one.
