A good idea: Grey has a number of tunes for which he provides an annotated score of the tune as played by a particular player; a short essay about the tune, the player, and techniques used in the tune; and a recording of Grey playing the tune as annotated.
I downloaded the three free tunes he has there (can’t afford to buy the others just yet, being unemployed and all . . .), and they’re a neat tool for learning more about the music. The scores can help a beginner really see what’s going on in a tune, but of course you can just listen to the tune and read the essay, if the idea of sheet music in a folk tradition bothers you. Grey plays each tune on flute, at a very reasonable pace; it’s easy to follow along even without the score provided. The scores are provided as .pdf files, and are very clear; I like his system of annotation (about which there’s another essay on the website).
I’m not getting any kickbacks or anything; just thought that others might be interested. Grey’s obviously put a lot of time and thought into this; I enjoyed the essays and hearing the tunes as played by Grey.
Actually the latest Mac OS software (Panther) has Zip built in: when I downloaded Grey’s files they unzipped automatically and instantly appeared on my desktop. Nice touch!
I checked out the sample tunes and Grey’s tips on breathing, etc., and this looks like a nice resource.
I’ve downloaded Grey’s docs on ornamentation notation and breathing, both look great. And I’ve ordered his flute which I anxiously await.
Something that struck me what that when I ordered his CD a few months ago from CD Baby I got a small note from him thanking me. Not an automated response but a real hand typed note.
I’m not surprised about the thank-you note. In addition to being a great teacher, excellent raconteur, wonderful flute (and box!) player, Grey’s just a darned nice guy. If you ever get a chance to attend a workshop with him, jump on it.
WOW! What a nice lesson series (8 seconds total, unzipped - do I love my MAC or what?). I can’t wait for his book and CD lesson set. Looks like it’ll be mailed out next week. I’m one of those “lemme see the dots” kinda guys. I can get along learning by ear if someone gives me the first note.
