Still riding on the wave of beginner excitement, I have this sad and overwhelming urge to name my whistle…
Anyone else got a name for their whistle?

Don’t name it, in case you might have to kill it later to purchase a high end whistle, it’s easier that way.

Surely, even if it was the most awful one possible, people would feel a sentimental attachment to their first whistle??
I think my whistle has developed an attachment to me in thanks for saving it from a stagnant shop. It follows me about!

I have the same name for both my favorite instruments…Napoleon. Napoleon Clarke and Napoleon the Great. Actually it was my wife who came up with the name first, and I just transferred it over to the Clarke whistle.
I only have a name for one whistle and it’s unrepeatable! Totally unplayable.
I call my Hoover narrow bore brass sop D my “Pixie stick”.
Like Selkie, I only named one whistle. The name cannot be repeated in civil company.
Well, I only named three of my whistles, and those three are my Clarkes. For lack of better imagination, I call my Orig. Painted D, George; my Orig. Natural finish, Bob; and my Orig. Painted C, Fred.
I take George, Bob, and Fred pretty much everywhere, and they are my fav. performance whistles.
LOL!!! You guys crack me up!! Now all you need to do is get a LITTLE more creative with your names… Bob, Fred, etc are great but how bout some good three or four syllable names like Hezekiah? LOL Actually, I have no room to talk because I’ve never named a whistle. HOWEVER, my friend and I did name my shruti box (Indian drone instrument)… it is “Trudi Petoooti the Shruti”

I was initially thinking some standard english names. Walter (it is a waltons after all!). Peter also appealed for a while, as in ~ Piper, ~ Pan, but it wore off…
Now I am trying to find pagan-y type names. ‘Hermes’ is appealing, he invented the pan pipes (his son was Pan), or ‘Aeolus’, the greek mythological ‘king of wind’. And I also found that there is a Slavic goddess(?) of the flute, Pizamar, but cant find much out about her.
Euterpe was the greek muse of music and her symbol was the flute, but her name is WEIRD.
If anyone knows some other names like this I would love to hear them!

Ok Ok. There is only one whistle that my brother and I have named. It’s kinda digressed from the original name because it’s kinda mean. BUT, we are ALL MATURE people here and i think that you can handle it. And believe me, it’s no offense to anyone. And if it does, please forgive. This was the perfect place to tell about it. But the very first whistle that I ever got was a brass (painted black) Faedog. It’s name with me will forever be…“The Devil Whistle”
I’ve named my BASS A Overton the Fearsome Intergalactic Death Uber-Whistle of Doom.

My only whistle worthy of a name is my Overton Low D. I’ve named it Amhran (gaelic for “song”). I have an Overton Low F coming, and I have a feeling I’m going to name it, too!
Haven’t named my whistles yet - although “Squeaky” sounds good to me right now!
I did name my uilleann pipes though – Saoirse (pronounced sayrsha or seersha). Meaning freedom, also sounds like the bellows working to inflate the bag.

Hmm, my Dixon Low D has a stamp on it “Tony Dixon”. So I guess it already has a name!

Oh, my. I think you HAVE to stop starting those mid-session riots. Obviously the whistle works well, but eventually someone’s going to link the whistle-shaped injuries to the instruments played before the bloodshed… and overhearing you referring to that Overton… I don’t know!
