Name that tune mega thread

hello, can someone identify the first tune, played here?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ1WvUJEsdU

it sounds a lot like the Bucks of Oranmore.. and its an incredibly played set!

It is “Gorman’s Reel”.
It’s the opening track on “Contentment is Wealth” by Matt Molloy and Seán Keane.

Edited to add: also known as “Throw Away the Keys” - https://thesession.org/tunes/1540

Vielen Dank for quick response !

MníM announces the tunes at the start : Caoinneadh General Munro, John Dwyer’s and the spike Island Lasses

Thanks. Also a reminder why I need to start learning Gaelic.

Anyone know what the tunes here are, particularly the first (unless its all one tune)?

I think the tunes are Eimhin’s and Cahir’s Kitchen from the playing of Paddy Keenan on the Long Grazing Acre recording.
I’ve been wrong before, however.

Thanks, sounds right to me.

Speaking of Keenan though, anyone know what the first tune he is playing here is?

Hello folks, any chance of a cheeky ID on this one please: https://www.mediafire.com/file/xktl2sqcei69wj8/MJ_whistle_tune.mp3/file

Thanks in advance!

I’d give it a go, but I have no idea how to download the tune from that website. Nothing seems to work. Anywhere else you can put it?

The tune sounds like Julia Delaney to me.

I tried it again this morning, and it downloaded fine. Dunno what was wrong last night,

Yes, it’s Julia Delaney, but played wrong. Sounds like someone who once heard a trad musician playing it and has misremembered it. The second part in particular is missing some of the tune, ending up with a very repetitive version as a result.

Much obliged, thanks folks. I shall go back to the source and learn it all proper like

Julia Delaney as most people know it these days was one of Tommy Potts’ re-imaginings of existing tunes. The ‘original’ as it appears in O’Neill’s collection is a pretty straightforward reel in D, still played today under various names. Not sure what a ‘proper’ version would be. The Bothy Band one is the standard version for most people I suppose.

I was given a lovely version of the tune by Martin Rochford, perhaps a remnant of Potts’ visits to East Clare. It is clearly influenced by Potts’ version but it has a different turn to it that makes it an attractive alternative.

Can someone tell me these two tunes…the fist one is mentioned but I am not sure exactly he is saying (I’m hearing “two on this condition”?) nor did a search turn up anything for me (2:50 in):

And this one here (first tune from 26s to about 1:10)

The Battle of Aughrim

The title he gives is “Too Long In This Condition”, which in its’ original form was a Highland bagpipe pibroch.
