I’ve got two, count them, TWO, new sets to learn this week. If I could get some ID’s on these, much obliged, bigly praise, holy hand grenade and so forth.
In the first set, I don’t know the second tune offhand, and it’s hard to hear exactly what it is with everything that’s going on in that recording. However, the last tune is the incredibly famous “Road to Lisdoonvarna”.
I couldn’t work out even what type of tune the first one was. The next one is The Morning Dew. I know the one after that very well, but struggling to place it at the moment … got it! It’s the Grumbling Old Man (sometimes there’s a Woman in there too). And that’s another tune I’m not fond of. Not quite so bad as Tamlin, but still …
Excellent, thanks again. To be honest, it won’t hurt not to know all the tunes. I can BS that I’m hanging back to give the set more variety of instruments or something
Sorry, could I ask you to double-check the ID on Farewell to Ireland, please? Both on Youtube and The Session, I get a very different sounding tune by that name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfcqGJBxxSg
Aaand… it’s that wonderful time of the week again, where I need to ask you for ID’s on a completely new tune-set, if you would be so good as to investigate this link: http://www.mediafire.com/file/leiakc1xk93a304/grannies_jeans.m4a. I’m hoping that the set’s name, “Grannie’s Jeans”, might be a hint of some sort.
I’m afraid I don’t know any of those, but they all sound ‘composed’ to me, ie probably newly composed. I could be wrong, but they don’t sound trad to me, at any rate.
The tune starts at 4:37, I think at around 3:20 they are talking about the tunes name, but I can’t understand what they are saying !
Really nice tune, listened to it at first on the chieftains album “down the plank old road”, where Molloy plays it as a solo during the big last song of the record !
They call the second one the Killavil, but probably meant the Killavil Postman (or maybe John Carty said that, but the second word was cut off): https://thesession.org/tunes/7317
Edited to add that the first one I would think of as a Sligo or northern polka, but the second one as more of a barndance or ballroom dance tune.
What often works with a situation like this, is go to the “Recordings” section at “thesession.org” and have a look through the lists. I knew I’d heard this pair of tunes before, so went to “Pathway To The Well” - https://thesession.org/recordings/2801 -
and looked for “The Killavil Postman”. Lo and behold, the polka you’re asking about is there, first tune on track #13, - it’s “The Ballinafad” polka - complete with a link to the sheet music.
