My own YouTube video clip

Hi all,

I’ve put a small clip on YouTube - playing a tune, comments are welcome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1bZ_aJ9gO0

The flute is a Sweetheart rosewood - bought 2nd-hand from another forum-user  (thanks Shannon). The clip is recorded using a normal digital camera (that also can record small(er) video clips).

Cheers!

/Brian

That flute sounds beautiful to me! Thanks for the clip

M

Yep, lovely tone and control! What’s the piece, though, and are you reading it? It feels a little bit “mannered” and rigid to me. I’d like to hear you playing more freely.
BTW, can I suggest you could have put your link on the “Clips” thread rather than started a separate one? Nothing that says sound clips only are allowed there!

It’s a tune I made myself on Sunday. I called it ‘Farewell to summer’, because it’s definitely adios to the summer where I live for now :-s

If anyone is curious about the notes - they can be found here (PDF-doc):

Thanks for comments!

great !!!

i agree that it would be nice to see it flowing more, but the tune is nice, and great tone.

That’s a nice composition!

I always read the music when I record myself because it helps me make less mistakes. For some reason, as soon as the record button is pushed I make way more mistakes than I ever would normally.

Lovely tone and tune!

I see what is meant by your playing in a “mannered” way. I think less rhythm and a tendency to separate phrases would give it a more “dreamy” quality that seems inherent to the composition. You could also play it effectively as a slow reel.

Very nice! For a brand new tune, I am not surprised at the ‘measured’ quality… as you get used to it, and find the heart of it, after having given birth to the melody, you will relax and it will shine through. Very nice tone… and tune.

is that the new rule now, that they have to be nested in there, to be lost and forgotten?

Sounds great!
Thanks. Let us know when the first CD comes out…

No “rules”, Daiv - though nothing commited to memory is totaly or truly lost while one lives… Of course one can play freely and expressively whilst reading - but my observation and questions seem to have been on-target given the answer and the subsequent observations of others. It is a (lovely) new piece, and taking account also of Diane’s point about the difficulty of recording oneself well, I’m sure Brian’s performance of it will grow and develop and lose that slightly stilted feeling, whether or not he commits it to memory. I only observed that Brian appears to be reading in his clip after starting to wonder about the “feel” of his playing, hence my question to him. I play both ways myself, BTW.

Thanks for all your comments. And yes, I am using the print as I play - I had just finished it, and I couldn’t remember the order of the tune (a lot is repeating phrases).

I get your point on playing it “mannered” - but I’m not sure whether it’s because the tune is new, that I’m reading, or that I’m recording. (Or maybe that’s just how I play (it)). I have an idea that it would be easier - at least for me - to play it more flowing if there were guitar chords to support, but I’m not really that good at adding guitar chords. I hope I can get a friend of mine to give it a try some time, maybe then I can try recording it again. At least I hope so - lines 9-12 are meant for “guitar emphasis”, anyway

I’m glad you like the tune, it’s actually quite fun to play, I think. If anyone would like the ABC, it goes something like this:

X: 1
T: Farewell to summer

Oh, I’m sorry I missed the “posting clip” thread. Thanks again for all your comments.

I’ve just listened to your signature clips - more lovely playing, especially good, strong, even tone, but a few rhythmic hiccups, more in the reels than the jig. Is the jig another of your own, or trad? Very nice, either way.

BTW, I don’t know if it is just my crappy computer speakers, but there is a constant ringing overtone on your recordings - have you got your recording or transfer level set a bit high? I don’t usually have that problem with Boxnet or Youtube downloads, and I know some early uploads I did had too high a transfer level from my minidisc onto the computer and peaked horribly.

Thanks for sharing your tune - I’ll turn it into dots and have a play through when I get a chance.

EDIT - I’ve done that now! Nice!! Dots below.
Incidentally, I’m not expert at this depth of music theory, but I’m quite sure it isn’t “in” G major. Would you resolve at the end to a held E, or possibly B? (Assuming you don’t just go back around and fade out…) Maybe some of our better educated members can confirm on this, but I think your tune is in E Dorian gapped on C# (no Cs at all in it, sharp or natural). It might be D Mixolydian or B Phrygian though. “B minor gapped on C#” or “E minor” would be more accurate than G “major”, but it really is modal. I’ve taken the liberty of writing in a held B at the end as that’s what I’d do, but if you disagree, tell me and I’ll change it.

Well, you got me there  I agree that it’s not in Gmajor (that’s put in to set the key in the print; the “#” at the top-line, and that’s it). I’m not into the whole mixolydian-thing, which is why I don’t dare putting in chords. I tried and played it through a midi-player, but I can’t seem to hit the right chords  . I would probably end on a E, hmm - or would I?, but your guess is as good as mine  But I think you’re right (if I understand you correct) that C (both C and C#) does not belong there…

If anybody knows please let me know

OK, got some info/help from an old friend who is not only a very fine ITM fiddler much steeped in the music, but also an accomplished classical musician with a BMus and a sound knowledge of modes and other music theory. Here’s the gist of his comments after checking out your piece at my request:

I think you’re right to the extent that, if it fits into a mode at all, then it would have to be Edor, gapped at the ‘c’, so, essentially one of those hexatonic modes which are quite common in Irish music. But, for it to be idiomatic, normally the tonic would have to be much more clearly emphasised within the structure of the tune, or at least that’s what would normally happen within a hexatonic mode. There is also quite often an emphasis on a ‘tenor’ note, generally at the fifth degree. I think it’s partly the lack of this second thing that makes this piece sound a bit aimless to me, together with the open form - lots of phrase/idea repetition/recurrence, but no real structure. Those three things - tonic and tenor centring and melodic structure are the reasons why it doesn’t quite sound like a trad piece or truly in the idiom.

It definitely isn’t in B or D, of any flavour. And I would probably end on an E (and I do mean an E … i.e. not an e)

One more little bit of help. I’ve got the chords for it. Believe it or not, the only chords that ‘work’ are to play Emin for 2 bars, then Dmaj for 2 bars, then Emin for 2 bars, then Dmaj for 2 bars … etc. etc. etc.

I hope that is helpful!
Good luck with it.

haha… i’m sorry. i learn almost all my music by ear and memorize anything else. i dont like playing off sheetmusic. you could always tell if i had practiced for band in school–anything i actually practiced was memorized.

what i meant to say, was “is that the rule that all sound clips need to be in the sound clip thread?”

Ok, that leaves out my idea of trying to play it with a guitar, because no guitar player could live with doing just that for so long  Ah well, I had a lot of fun with it…

Thanks for looking into it.
