My real name is Randy Chester, and my wife, Mackenzie, and I have a band called The Josephine Knot. We are recording a cd at home and have many songs in-progress. Today is our 10th wedding anniversary and since most of our songs are about love and marriage (goes together like a horse and carriage), we decided to take this day to announce our new band name, launch our new website, and post a new song. The song is called Home, and it was beautifully written by my wife and adequately arranged by me. It features yours truly on my Big O Goldie low D. We play all the instruments on all the songs, and though we are not strictly an Irish traditional band, I do play low and high whistles on alot of our songs as well as guitar in DADGAD tuning (often used in Irish trad). We also have a video up of a song called Song For Kells, which features my Lochlan low D, a very interesting sounding whistle. Also, my tune Nellie’s Waltz is up on the site and is available for download. So, hope you find our website and tunes interesting. Enjoy! Here’s the link:
So far I’m in the middle of the video for “Pitter Patter” and I wish to humbly request that you take all my money.
I will be singing that to my 1-year-old tonight at bedtime. Your guitar style is very, very pleasant. That and your wife’s lovely voice remind me somewhat of a British band called Equation.
Good luck with the recording!
Happy 10th anniversary Mackenzie and Randy! Love your new website and it’s great fun to see your children hangin with you as you record.
Keep up the good work and thanks for enriching the world with your music.
Howdy, neighbor! Glad you like our music. How would you like to process that transaction where we take all your money? Does Paypal work for you? Or I could just meet you half way. We live right here in NE Georgia. Heck, I could drive all the way to Raleigh. That way we can catch Barrowburn live as a bonus! Haha!
But, really, thanks for the feedback! I checked out Equation and I see what you mean. Very nice! We are big fans of another British band from the 90’s, The Sundays. They are another husband and wife team. Also The Innocence Mission from the US. Both have great female singers and interesting, laid-back guitar work. Stylistically, Pitter Patter was our attempt to pull off something in the Motown vein, which is more noticeable in the studio version (it’s on our Music page for the audio).
Thanks again! Hey we really need to come hear you guys play at your pub gig. My brother lives in Fayetteville, and he’s setting up a gig for us at his church youth group in July I believe. Maybe we can mosey on up to Raleigh and meet you guys!
Hi! Yes, we do! My dream is to have a family band. My oldest, Rosie, is 5 and she’s already playing the penny whistle. I want a van with some partridges painted on the side. Haha!
Thanks Ronaldo! Yes, it works some of the time. Haha.
And thanks for asking me to share Nellie’s Waltz on your website. What a tremendous honor! I have some great whistles, but my Reyburn Standard low D is my go-to whistle. I love it! It has a reedy, mysterious, almost Middle Eastern quality I’ve not heard in other whistles. I can totally see why L.E. McCullough calls the Reyburn “a sleek, robust panther of a whistle”. So true! When I play it I feel like Bagheera from Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
Danke, Andreas! I’m glad you liked the site and the music. They are both a work in-progress. As soon as I can afford an upright bass and a bodhran I want to add those instruments. Oh, and would love to learn bouzouki! About the YouTube channel, If I can find the time, I’m thinking about doing a comparison video with my four low D’s. I have a short-reach Overton made by Goldie back in 1999, a 1-year old Big O Goldie (big finger holes), a Lochlan (bigger finger holes), and my Reyburn Standard. Should be fun.
