C&F Forum Member's show on the Internet!

Hi guys.

I hope I’m not breaching etiquette or anything by doing this, but my band performed at Cuyahoga Valley National Park on 18th January as part of our first US Tour and the gig was recorded by FolkAlley. I’d like to put the link on here for anyone who is interested to have a listen.

The band is called Malinky. We are a 5 piece band from Scotland and we do mostly Scots songs and traditional balladic type stuff with some tune sets thrown in.

For those of a whistley interest, you will hear my Burke Bb, C, & D, my Overton high D, Copeland High D, Colin Goldie Low G, and Copeland Low F.

Whether you like hearing some different whistles or just enjoy the music, I don’t mind at all. It’s just nice to be part of C&F!

Thanks
m.d.

Absolutely within etiquette I would say. Great whistle playing

Honestly, I liked your whistling the most I guess

Why are you called like that? Seems sort of funny to me, as in Czech (my language), it means something like “little raspberries”

The name comes from a Scottish nursery rhyme that is also found in Ireland - “Skinny Malinky Long Legs, Big Banana Feet”. We discovered that it has various meanings in Slavic languages after we played in the Czech Republic and Hungary.

We had a version in Dublin when we were kids.

“Skinny Malink Melodeon Umbrella Feet
Went to the pictures and couldn’t find a seat
When the picture started, Skinny Malink farted,

Great music by the way!

Tommy.

Not only within etiquette, but much appreciated!

Thanks very much for the kind words!

I didn’t add the link looking for kudos, I was just pleased with the way the concert came out and thought there might be a certain interest to other whistle players, as I like listening to other players myself.

Maybe not, but you deserve all those you get. This is a great concert.
I’m really enjoying listening to it. Great whistling, singing and Bouzouki-ing.
Sounds like a very cohesive group. I liked the occasional appearance of the
cello, too.

What (besides key) informs your decisions about which whistle to use for
each song?

love it well played all

m.d. this is terrific. Does Malinky have any recordings that you sell? I’d be interested in a CD.

Thanks!

Brilliant band! I recognize the one guy who plays with Fred Morrison.

What (besides key) informs your decisions about which whistle to use for
each song?

The key is really the only thing that determines which whistle to use as, apart from having 3 different high Ds, I only have one of each of the rest, having not yet succumbed to WHOA due to shortage of funds! Playing with singers means I have to have just about every key available. It’s a good job Mike Burke makes whistles in “odd” keys, but I hope to pick up one of his A flats and a decent A at some stage. Then I’m ready for anything!!

My Copeland is just too pure and loud to play with a singer, so it only gets used on tune sets where everything else is in as well. The Burke is the whistle for using on delicate stuff as it’s a mite more restrained than the Copeland. I think my old Overton has the best all-round sound but it can’t be tuned other than through a bit of warmth so I don’t like to expose that in the framework of a song. I guess it’s just a matter of horses for courses.

Thanks Pipezilla! Yes, Fred is a good mate of ours. We toured with him in Germany 6 years ago and I wrote one of the tunes we played during the show for him.

Nice stuff, that!
