Before the fairly recent popularity (or return thereof) of box mounts, and during the proliferation of plastic mounts, I bought 2 full sets. UGH! I can’t stand the site of 'em! Anybody with me on that???
with there fellow florida feller… first two sets i got were antler. discussed options with my maker and because box is relatively soft and these are gigging pipes, he went with horn where the mounts would take a beating and box in a supporting role… switch em’ out if they’re really bothering you… or wrap them with pretty colored tape. might i suggest pink? it’s my daughter’s favorite these days. 
Just about to send off my chanter to swap out the plastic for box. I’ll finally have a completely matching set! 
I’m finding them quite fragile. Why is this material used at all? It does not even look like Ivory. So many attractive alternatives besides Ivory— I think it really detracts. My next wood turning project is to replace my plastic mounts, hopefully with boxwood, if I can find a source. Our one local hardwood supply has gone out of business.
I did things backwards. My pipes are made of boxwood with ebony mounts.

I have a Bb chanter with billiard ball ivory mounts, and a D chanter with elkhorn mounts The puck on the D set is plastic, looks ok, but I’m going to ask a local silversmith to make a brass copy of the plastic puck
Not all im. ivory are created equal (or is that equally?). I have a B set whose fauxvory mounts are quite well done. They have a luminosity and depth unlike your usual plastic stuff. IMO.
I was thinking about pursing replacements for all the mounts, but I’m guessing (help me here pipemakers) that the amount of money and time it’d take to do all the turning for all the pieces on a full set, would be pricey. My plastic mounts are brittle. They’ve not aged well, and box would be much tougher than what I have. hmmmmmmm…
Is there anyone near you who is just getting started making pipes? It would be a great non-destructive project. Maybe if you were to supply the wood?
…no makers here…it’s looks like it’s plastic for the foreseeable future!
who made your set? you could probably have a couple components done at a time to spread out the cost and not be without anything to play for a long time. it may look a bit funny for a while though.
