What material is used for imitation ivory on the drones?

Does anyone know what makers use for the chanter and drone mount material.

Is it a plastic (not the wood type, I also have a Kirk Lynch with wood mounts) ?

But I have several of sets and it looks like the same stuff?

It must be some type of imitation ivory?

Yes, it is a plastic. There are several brands usedby various makers. Search the web for faux ivory, fake ivory, imitation ivory.

imitation ivory comes from an imitation elephant or walrus. Though scientists have yet to prove it’s existence, there is no such thing as an imitation rhinoceros.

Tagua Nut is used as a sub for ivory

Polyester resin based materials are very common substitutes for ivory

from this source: http://www.ivoryalternative.com/index.htm

Or, you can use animal horn, bone or fossilized natural materials:

Tagua nut tends to darken significantly over time. I am told it can also suffer from splitting. Animal horn is also known to be unstable over time. The faux ivories made of plastic can be very good quality in appearance and more than adequately fill the bill.

I like to use Elk antler, although it stinks like burnt a$$

Taugua nuts are a pain in the bum to turn on the lathe. I’m using a two part mix called Alumalite. Is sets in a mold in 3 - 5 minutes.

Do you have a picture of that?

I will sometime soon. I have to get a website going first.

I hope my pipemaker is not reading this, but I would like to cast my own mounts with this stuff, one time
does it look like ‘between ivory and boxwood’
or is it white?

nice color, your bag and bellows :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks guy good feed back!

I will look into this.

Can this material be glued, and if so, what would be good?

\Two part epoxy? Super glue? What do you think?

Since the mounts aren’t structural you probably won’t have any problems bonding parts together but the usual rule is: If it’s epoxy based use epoxy. The same thing goes for Polyester resin… use polyester to bond to polyester.
