Boxwood instead of ivory

Hi all…what do ye all think of having boxwood instead of the ivory on an ebony andsilver set ?

I like the look of boxwood against ebony, but when you add the silver aspect, it tends not to be as pleasing to my eye. I’d go with the ivory.

…what Joseph said

There is a picture on andreas rogge’s site which has boxwood and ebony on a silver set (ennis c sharp set), looks pretty nice to me. Plus Gay McKeon’s cillian o’briain set has boxwood and looks the biz

actually…one more thing. I saw a chanter the other night which had no mounts, ie, the ‘mounts’ were turned from the same piece of timber that the chanter itself was - blackwood - which ordinarily would tend to look rather boring, but htis chanter has shiny chrome bits which really looked good. I think the fact that the mounts were black kind of balanced it all out so it didn’t look too overbaring. So there’s an option other than boxwood or ivory. But, personally, I think boxwood goes better with brass.

I had a look too -

There’s a nice one in boxwood and brass and I gotta say, the box 'n brass has that nice antique look to it that the box 'n silver just doesn’t seem to convey in the same way - although they’re still both bloody nice sets.

Still, it’s all in the eye of the beholder

My B and D Rogge plumwood chanters have boxwood which I like as I am ordering the rest of my D plumwood with boxwood.

Yes, I have seen the sets you mention and they are sweet… if I had the cash-a-roonie I’d jump all over them. I feel, however, that the silver would take away some of the ‘warmth’ that the combination of boxwood and ebony brings. Just an opinion…

I like how Brian’s set looks. Very Gorgeous!!

I think boxwood mounts look best with cocobolo or other darkish woods. I have a blackwood Davey Stevenson chanter with maple mounts. It looks unusual, but not striking.

You could choose to turn from the dark-side completely and move into the light.

My new lemonwood C chanter by Mr. D. Boisvert.

Grrrrrrr!

Mukade

I can dig it.

You can stain the boxwood whatever colour you like. The lighter the stain is the closer to ivory it will look… plus it’s several hundred dollars cheaper…!

Mukade, could you post a larger picture please? I am very near sighted :astonished:

PD.

Boxwood is very nice, but I think would be better with dark brown/red woods (coccobolo, rosewood, mopane, etc.)
Young boxwood could suit ebony because it’s very pale, but It will darken with time and will be almost yellow/orange -not so nice with blackwood or ebony.

Good looking chanter, Mukade! Got to hear it
when I was over at Davey’s place collecting
my rehabbed Ginsberg C set. Very nice. You
must be stoked.

I like the fact that you can stain all these woods. Perhaps a nice configuration could be boxwood with dark-stained boxwood mounts? I read that osage orange, when oxided with ammonia, can turn as dark as blackwood with very stirking red streaks. Just some food for thought.

I got tired of looking at the rest of my set not matching the antler on my bruce chanter. the reg caps (and everywhere else there would be decorative pieces) are just scored brass…sigh…

I dind’t want to spend money on antler (if i could even find it) only to have it not match or be able to be polished enuff…so i replicated it.

i scanned the antler mounts on my chanter and used photoshop for the basis of this endeavor - multiple layers that in the end look like antler mounts to match the ones on the chanter. the layers are

dark/blued antler grain on glossy photo paper (applied directly to the brass areas I wanted to hide), 2 coats of clear nailpolish, a clear label printed with a mottled orange/yellow tint, 2 coats of clear nailpolish, a clear label with mottled orange with brown streaks, three coats of clear nailpolish.

Even right next to the polished antler of my chanter my ornaments match its color and tone near exactly…i was pleasantly surprised. These areas were too deeply scored for me to properly engrave when I was doing the rest of the set.

stop cringing…it looks great…now it all looks like it was originally part of the same set…

…uh…mmmmm…er…huh? :really:

I agree with Joseph. The boxwood against the ebony would be just fine, but with the silver aspect it is not as eye-catching so to speak. Boxbood is great but if you can afford it get the real ivory (or imitation).

Antaine…that’s what I call thinking outside the square…I like

At the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, I saw King Tutankhamun’s (King Tut) chair - a small chair executed in ebony and ivory, an aesthetic from 3,300 years ago.
