Boxwood instead of ivory

This is Noel Carberry at the 11th William Kennedy Piping Festival with a Rooge set I think in ebony and boxwood.

my scanner can do 28000 dpi…i thought just scanning the real antler would be enough, but it had too much contour and needed the “three dimensional translucence” effect…i was surprised it worked, but i’m really happy with the result…

Boxwood’s great. I suppose I would maybe lean towards boxwood and brass (or boxwood and gold…I can dream, can’t I?), but silver would do in a pinch.

For those who are familiar with Hamish Moore’s smallpipes, I’m quite fond of his aesthetic approach for mounts. When I wind up getting a flat set (not if, but a big, long when), I think I might have it made in ebony with silver and cocobolo mounts. Ha!

Another option for metal would be to consider what’s known as “ok gold”.
It looks exactly like 14 kt. gold but at a tiny fraction of the cost.
