Does anybody know on which modern recordings examples of Backstitching could be found?
The only examples I can find are on Patsy Touhey’s recordings.
Are they pipers nowadays using this form of ornamentation?
Jerry O’Sullivan’s version of Colonel Fraser (off the CD the Invasion) has plenty of back stitching the first time he plays it through (before he adds drones).
Try Andy Conroy, Mick Coyne and Mikie Smyth.
Listen to the Harvest Home, lots of pipers doing it or trying to there.

Also Leo Rickard. He has a solo CD which, as far as I recall, is entirely unaccompanied, but there’s so much going on in his playing that you’d probably need to use a slowdowner to figure it out!
I was also going to mention Leo Rickard, really clean piping and both of his CD’s are great for learning tunes off of. Here’s an example on YouTube of Garrett Barry’s and Lark in the Morning on which he using backstitching extensively for the finale of the tunes.
Also great fun to play “name that piper” with the slideshow.
I had a lovely lovely session with Leo Rickard the other week. What a fantastic fella he is! Beautiful piping and the most welcoming, friendly chap you could wish to meet.
