Joe, can you clarify your role and that of the other moderators? Are you just going to pop into a thread and say something inane like, “Oh, please, please be nice”, or do you actually have the ability to lock threads and remove offensive posts? Should people email you as the UP moderator, or should they still be going to Dale et al? Do you have the ability to lock out persistent offenders? Can you tell us where does that highway lead to, or how do I work this thing? Is this really Pepsi? etc.
Hello Guys,
It is really great to be able to use this forum again.
Whatever the rights and wrongs that led to the lock out, I think we all now know where to draw the line.
As Mukade as stated, Joseph (the Florida one) ‘has the button’ but Mukade and myself have offered to help out. Basically this is going to mean being a regular reader of the posts and flagging up to Joseph anything that smacks of a personal attack for him to view.
Controversial issues are bound to arise but from my interpretation of the rules of the Forum this in itself is not a problem. It is only when it becomes personal that we tread on thin ice.
Dale has given us another chance and for that I am pleased. Hopefully we will not give him cause to regret his decision.
Good wishes to you all.
Joseph (the UK one)
I would imagine that Joe would probably start by saying something “inane” in order to keep from having to lock a thread or delete a post. It’s called diplomacy. It’s only fair to give folks a warning before you drop the hammer on them… but I don’t want to put words in Joe’s mouth.
My thanks to these good gentlemen for offering to moderate the board.
Some perspective on all of this–in spite of the protests of those who and an unmoderated, pro-slagging, anarchy of a forum–Actually intervention on this forum by moderators has been rare and has involved only a tiny fraction of posts. In the history of the forum, only two people have had their log-ins deleted (unless I’m forgetting one or two) and both are back now (although one has a secret identity ). I’m not being defensive, I’m just pointing out some perspective.
Yes, inane is my other middle name. But I do have locking capabilities et al. I’m not into power tripping, but at the same time, I don’t want to risk having this forum removed… so, everybody monitoring their own personal conduct here would certainly be helpful.
Would anyone who posted to them object if the two threads that caused the commotion were deleted from the record? If these threads are now the property of the whole forum, would anyone else object?
With hindsight my responses were perhaps excessive, but I’d be reluctant to go back and edit them in isolation (even if I could, and I’m not sure that I can). As reported in another thread, the ebay sale that sparked the set-to left things about all-square - no obvious winners; no obvious losers. The discussion around it is now redundant, and in my view some of our comments around it demeaned the forum. So my vote would be to ditch those threads, if that’s technically possible - but only if there’s a consensus for that. I’m not a fan of imposed censorship.
Hi Peter K.
I am inclined to agree with you regarding the offending threads/opinions being removed. We have after all read them and as we know a few threads went beyond ordinary controversy and became something else.
It also cost us dear in terms of access to make new posts for a while. From that perspective alone I feel we have all learned a valuable lesson.
I’m not sure if Joseph ‘the Florida one’ has the means at his disposal to eradicate threads that are in a ‘locked’ state but hopefully he will read this particular thread and offer a solution.
So yes Peter, I for one would like to see the items ‘vaporised’. They serve no useful purpose to existing or new members.
Anyone else like to comment?
