Michael Tubridy

Good news today: I will go to a flute workshop with Michael Tubridy next month. But all I know about him is that he had been a founding member of the Chieftains. So I wonder if anybody has met him in real life, in a workshop or something like that. What kind of a teacher is he? Are there solo recordings or other interesting stuff about him …?

Michael’s a nice guy, and well-respected as an instructor. His solo recording is “The Eagle’s Whistle”. He’s also involved in step dancing, and provides the playing and directions (along with his wife) on A SELECTION OF IRISH TRADITIONAL STEP DANCES, published by the Brooks Academy ( http://www.setdance.com ).

He’s a real gentleman and a lovely player. He published some tune collections for his local CCE branch. Also [interesting sideline maybe for those interested in astronomy and things mechanical] he was the head engineer in charge of the restoration of the great telescope in Birr castle Co Offaly.

Kevin and Peter, thanks for your replies. I’m really looking forward to meet Mr Tubridy now.

you might ask to look at his flute.
As i"m told, it’s a fine example of a Wylde “from Rudall & Rose” and plays like a gem.
