Registration is now open for the 2011 tionól!

We are pleased to welcome legendary flute and whistle player Michael Tubridy, who will offer a masterclass open to all on Sunday.

Michael Tubridy is known for his talents on the flute, tin whistle, and the concertina, an instrument common to his native Co. Clare. While studying at UCD in the 50’s, Michael began to attend the Thomas Street Pipers’ Club, where he met Paddy Moloney and Sean Potts, and they established strong musical connections. Along with Paddy, Seán Potts, and Martin Fay, he was one of the founding members of The Chieftains in 1962. The pressures of touring and performing took its toll on the quiet flute player and he left the Chieftains in 1979, to go back to work as an engineer. He has continued to be associated with traditional music, through teaching at traditional music festivals. He is best known for playing the flute in a deeply compelling, traditional style.

I’m very excited. Have not seen him for nearly a year. I was very lucky to have done the concert with him and Fr. Charlie at the Philadelphia flute weekend last September and what a pair of gentlemen (and now they will both be at the Tionol too!). Not only that, but their flute workshop earlier that same afternoon was simply fascinating. Hearing Michael Tubridy’s account of his early days with the Chieftains and the session crowd he was part of at the time, was like hearing a live account of who’s who in Irish music history.

Nah I’m not trying to promote this event, nah. It’s a nice intimate weekend. I just want to get a name tag there.
