I bought a used Howard Low D from a fellow C&F’er (thanks, Jim) and, since the mouthpiece is removable, I’d like to try making a couple of bores in different keys to go with the whistle. Has anyone tried this? My previous experience with a Susato Low D leads me to think that as the length of the bore decreases, the width of the bore begins causing problems in the upper octave. Any suggestions for suitable keys or materials to try?

I’ve got an older Howard Low D (damn big holes, and impossible 2nd octave), so I tried making a low G using a 1" diameter aluminum shower curtain rod. The bell note sounded good and strong, but alas, I ran out of time, patience, and (oops) material before I got all the holes to my satisfaction. My whistle seemed to be half metal and half electrical tape…
