Help! I used a piece of aluminum pipe to make my whistle
sounds great. But the top hole won’t come in tune it is very flat the others are all at 440 on the tuner. If I drill it much bigger I be able to drive a truck thru it. can I move it.
do I go up or down the pipe
short answer,
up.
The bunny is correct. Just put some duct tape over that hole and make another hole a little higher. Sounds like you are doing just fine if that is all that is left to do.
Thanks for the tip this is my second attempt with the
low whistle it does sound great sweet tone the first was of copper and a little to chiffy for me .
If you wind up making the top hole or two too big, you’ll have a really hard time getting high c’s and b’s and higher to come out without blowwing you’re brains out as well.
The ammount of pressure it takes to push out notes has to be in balance to a degree. If you wind up with holes to big or too small to account for bad spacing, you wind up with some wierd notes. Normal fingerings don’t come out right and stuff like that.
In particular third octave notes arn’t just off, but totatlly screwwed. I played around with whistle making back when I started. I wound up having to make about four bodies befor I was even halfway happy. That’s not saying I was happy or anything. ..
I surmise that if you are good at taking measurements, and handy with an equation or two, and able with small power tools, that making bodies isn’t that hard.
Well Bob we are waiting to hear how your whilstle turned out?
The project was a success looks as good as it sounds.
moved the durn holes up a little and in tone she came.
thanks again for the tips all were greatly appreciated

That is great bob. I know you will have fun with it now. But tell us more about it. What did you put over the big hole or were you able to just move it up some?
at first I was going to repair the larger hole than move
it up the tube. But after some contemplation I decided to
remove the lower sound body and make the whistle tunable.
I used a piece of pvc pipe to make the slide.Than built the new tube I moved the upper three holes a 1/4" up.This gave the desired effect the whistle is much louder than my copper one and has a deep tone.my fipple design may need a little tweaking though I used epoxy impregnated hard wood for the plug. the windway cut I copied from an ALBA whistle I saw on the net. This fipple is very easy to make.I am working with just hand tools and a dremel at this point.I think a little filing of the cut may bring in to were I want it.I also want to use some type of plastic for the plug maybe delrin or lucite.
