Finally!! After much hair pulling, computer bashing and Digital camera throwing, I have finally posted my first low whistle review on the new website the Pipers grip. You can view the review of the new Chieftain V3 low D here:
I have two other reviews already finished (Overton shortreach low D and Howard low D), I just need to get them posted on the site. I hope to get at least one of them up by the end of the week.
Any feedback on content, things you’d like to see in reviews, etc. would be appreciated!
Kevin…
Jolly Good! Very nice review! And just the sort of Low Whistle information many are looking for! Especially for new whistles, coming on the market. (Without forgetting the oldies but goodies…)
Also, your experience with other “lows,” from other cultures, seems to inform you quite well, for assessing our own beloved “Irish” Low Whistles. Brilliant. Gives your “take” a well-roundedness IMHO.
I, for one, am enthused by your evolving review work. Thank you!
(PS Hope you’ve already done your review on the MK Low F…as I hope to be playing it, myself, before too long…)
Well done Kevin! Very useful info you gave. I would love to see a review of the Alba Vibe low D. I believe Stacey has an ongoing tour of the Vibe. Best, Cyril.
On another note, I just received a Howard Low D with the new version head, and I have to say it is amazing! Kept all the good things about the old and improved on the rest. Sigh, yet another whistle to add to the line to review. Back to work!
Thanks for the reviews. It’s always helpful to hear what others think about the various whistles out there. I own a Chieftan V3 Low D (non-tuneable) myself and feel the same way that you do (mostly). I happen to love the tone, and agree, it is EXTREMELY responsive, which is nice in a Low D. Keep the reviews coming
What are the differences you noted. I honestly couldn’t identify any difference at all, nor could my family. I don’t have a particularly sensitive ear, though.
The difference is not in the sound/tone, but in playability. Ornaments are faster and crisper, and the new version seems to “squawk” less. I would say the biggest difference is that the new Howard is more responsive. There are a few other differences I’m discovering, but you’ll have to wait for the review!
