Just now one of the Olympic skaters (Jason Brown) used music which started out with a long Low Whistle solo, written to sound sort of like a sean nos air.

Who was the whistler? And what make of whistle? I guess I should Google it.

Yep, Spillane - from the not often performed “Frozen River Dance”. 
Jason Brown had a very nice skate too. His skill was a good match for the music I thought.

There’s a trend! Not that anyone (else) would notice.
Russian born Alexander Majorov skating the men’s free program under the flag of Sweden used a remix of “Life Begin Again” by Afrocelts as his music. And yes, James McNally could be heard on low whistle. More interesting perhaps was hearing the vocal work of Iarla O’Lionaird. Sadly the Olympic skating federation prohibits lyrics to be part of the music accompanying a skater’s program so Robert Plant, who also sang on the original recording, could not make his Winter Olympics debut. Shame, after all he comes from the land of the ice and snow.
Johnny Wier commented that the music had no focus. Hopefully not many people look to Johnny Weir as a meter of good taste.

Or - questions of costumery aside - of nuanced hearing, anyway. It seemed evident to me that Brown was intimately familiar with the piece, enough to be able to execute certain movements in what I’m pretty sure was non-accidental sync with focal points in the piece’s phrasings. That’s some subtle stuff. It pleases me.
