Loud Bb whistle?

What’s a loud Bb whistle?
Something that carries but doesn’t use a whole lot of air?
I’m needing something loud for the street.
A Copeland would work, I’m sure.
Other suggestions?

try a good ol’ Generation Bflat. I have one that I love

Susatos are pretty darn loud

I think the Generation Bbs are consistently good. And, I also like the Susatos in that range.

I think the Susato M series (wider bore) is louder and generally better than the S series (narrower bore) in the Bb.

I have a Burke brass B flat, but it’s not loud at all. Now what about a Syn B flat? Anyone out there who has one and can tell something about it?

It’s very quiet. That’s one reason I love it.

For a loud Bb, I can’t think of better than Susato.

Hehe my first reaction was:

seriously though: I actually haven’t any Bflat whistles except an old Camac which is in itself quite loud, louder than Generation Bflats and with a lot more edge than the Susato Bflat which I don’t think of as particularly loud.

I have had a SYN B which was not loud at all so that doesn’t bode well for the Bflat, the Sindt B is nice and strong so I assume John’s Bflat would do well too. But all’s relative, the size of it will be by definition inhibiting to it’s loudness.

The solution I used when I needed Bflat was usually transposing to the E flat whislte which holds it’s own better in a Bflat environment.

I have a Water Weasel in Bb that’s pretty danged loud – great articulation too. Big bore, big holes, but doesn’t seem hard to play or take more air than any other whistle.

Might be hard to find one… i’m not giving mine up.

I have a fabulous Thin Weazel which would be terrific for you. Check with Glenn’s daughter Bree at thnwzl@aol.com. I got mine after Glenn passed away and at the time they had about 3 of these.

Thanks to all. I have a Gen Bb which is a good whistle,
but it won’t cut it on the street volume-wise.
I’ve played the Susato narrow bore Bb, which
wasn’t loud enough either. Maybe the wide bore
is a better bet–worth considering. The Susato
C works fine.

The Sindt Bb is a bit on the quiet side, IMO.
The Sindt D is surprisingly loud for what it is,
I think–a sindtillating whistle (get it?).

I have a Glenn Schultz Bb too, in grey PVC.
It’s loud, alright, but it takes a good deal of
air–at least given my capacities. I need
to be able to keep playing for hours!

My impression is that nothing beats the
Copeland in this department.

Thanks again.

Water Weasel Bbs are very nice and fairly loud. Susatos are pretty good in that range (I’ve got a B-natural that’s really good…best Susato I’ve owned).

My PVC Schultz Bflat takes less air than my Copeland D did. It’s definitely got the biggest sound of any Bflat I’ve played, not sure how it carries, though. The wooden Schultz Bflat takes considerably less than the PVC. Of course, it’s prettier, but you may not want to subject it to some of your street-playing conditions.

Not a Bb, but my Burke AlPro Mezzo A carries like crazy outdoors, and the air requirements are OK. I imagine a Bb of the same bore would be a great loud whistle with a similar refined voice. It’s also light enough to play for hours.

Maybe an Overton?.. i don’t have a Bb but my high D is loud and doesn’t take much air – lots of backpressure on it.

I perform on the street and I find that my Susato Bflat has plenty of volume to get the job done. My Waltons D is also loud too but mostly in the upper registers. I just got an Overton LowD that I can’t wait to bring to the street! The only guff i have with the susato is that it doesn’t have the metallic tone you get with (obviously) metal whistles. My overton Low D has lots of volume so I would imagine their Bflat(if they make one) would be comparable.

I would suggest you check out a Reyburn. They are loud relative to others when normally voiced, but you can also ask Ronaldo to bump up the volume even more when he voices your whistle.

Here’s a link to pics and a rreview of a Reyburn Bb:

The Alba Bb has a rich breathy tone and carries very well: I’m sure it would be loud enough for you. That’s my current favourite Bb, though I’m waiting for a Burke right now.

Overtons and Chieftains in the higher keys are about as loud as they come in my experience, particularly if you get one with high back-pressure.

Thanks. I played a Chieftain Bb in a store. It had a lovely tone,
I thought, but it wasn’t very loud. I’ve never played an
Overton Bb, to my sorrow. I’ve read (maybe Dales’ review)
that some feel it’s the best Overton key.

I’ve played an Overton low D on the street but it didn’t
carry–not it’s fault. I don’t think low D whistles are
cut out for the street. Flutes do better.

I’m interested in the Burke Bb and so I read with interest
the post about these. Might be a good way to go.

Thanks to all.
