A weird question i know! I am in a traditional band (5 piece) from Columbus Ohio and we are going to be near Gatlinburg for St. Paddy’s day. It wasn’t a case of him being de-canonised. ‘He’ was never canonised in the first place. He was’t the first to bring christianity to Ireland either. That’s another scam. And, wait for it, Patrick wasn’t Irish. Probably Welsh or maybe from present day Liverpool.
The other thing is that ‘Pateric’ is an awful lot like the Latin ‘Pater’ ie father or leader.
So Patrick may not have been the lads name at all…

OK–This seems to come up every couple of years. St. Patrick is still very much a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, and his feast day is still on the liturgical calendar (he was not among the “demoted” saints, like St. Christopher). While he wasn’t formally canonized according to the current set of procedures for attaining sainthood, he definately has full sainthood status.
Tommy is correct about Patrick being Welsh or a Briton, and he not being the first to bring Christianity to Ireland, but he did make it stick (until recently, anyway).
