Scientists dub new dinosaur the Appalachian lizard from Montgomery County

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Paleontologists have identified a new dinosaurspecies, an early relative of Tyrannosaurus rex that probably roamed what is now the southeastern United States about 77 million years ago.
The scientists made the identification from hundreds of fossilized fragments collected mostly in Montgomery County, Ala., and southwestern Georgia.
They named the new dinosaur Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis, which means the Appalachian lizard from Montgomery County. The eight-metre-long creature roamed the Earth 10 million years before T. rex and was smaller and more primitive, with a narrower snout.
David Schwimmer of Columbus State University; Thomas Carr of Carthage College of Kenosha, Wis.; and Thomas Williamson of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science were credited with the discovery when the dinosaur’s name was recognized by the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
“We’ve been finding teeth and odd bones from this animal for 20 years and it’s nice to finally have a name for it,” Schwimmer said.
The researchers said Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis was buried in mud at the bottom of a shallow sea about 77.8 million years ago, after currents carried it away from shore.
Right, the Appalachian lizard: On Saturday nights hereabouts he can be found at the tractor pull, buried in mud, with his narrow snout in a Pabst tall-boy.

I also live in the mountains, kinda-sorta, and have 27 of the original 32 (minus one back molar and all 4 wisdom teeth. That explains everything with me!)
I only pick on what I am or know, too. DH is sorta mountain (he was born in West Virginia). My ex’s family is from SE Kentucky (which makes my kids 1/4 Appalachian, and a “minority” as far as Cincinnati is concerned!). So when I make jokes about it, it’s only cuz I really love the people.

I can’t remember where it was, but I read somewhere that James Ussher did his research in the face of the prevailing thinking of that day, which was that the earth was younger than he claimed.
The only mistake he may have made was in pinning down 23-Oct-4004BC as the exact date of creation. What time zone would that have been in? After all, if I would have been born at exactly the same time in Newfoundland rather than the west end of Texas, my birth date would have been 8-Mar-1960 instead of 7-Mar-1960.

Fringe sects? Is that a relative term? Perhaps scientific? Some might say the Shouter Baptists of the Carribean and the Serpent Handlers of Appalachia are fringe sects. Others might think the Southern Baptists and the Pentecostal Holiness are fringe sects. Me? I’m pleased as a possum to come from one of the top five toothlessest states in the Union.
Just watch any episode of COPS on the Dubya-Bee or Fox and you will find that big cities, too, have more than their fair share of the toothless. I guess the difference is that out in the boonies, it comes from such things as gum disease from unchlorinated water supplies, chewnbaccer and type II diabetes, but in the city, it comes from such things as fighting and methamphetamine use.
