Important breakthrough OT.

It seems that some scientist in Britain have found a way to grow teeth using stem cell technology.

Unfortunatly the project seems self limiting. Finding people that actually want British teeth seems to be somewhat of a problem…

Cool! I want Doberman implants. :sunglasses:

British Doberman teeth?
Does anyone remember the episode of the Simpsons where Lisa was shown The Big Book of British Smiles at the dentist?

An inspired episode. I am living, breathing proof that cosmetic dentistry is not fashionable in the UK.

And Fox never paid me for the use of my teeth in that episode… I’ll ring my lawyer.

Actually it was Ralph (after being asked by the dentist “Why must you turn my office into a house of LIES?!”). I think you’re thinking of a different episode, in which Lisa was shown a computer model of what would happen to her teeth if she didn’t get braces.

I was astonished at the number of bad teeth I saw in Scotland/England when I was there in the 60’s, and dental care was offered at no charge.

It was then that I started seeing the “propaganda” I had gotten in the U. S. Navy about communism and socialism was really the truth.

I spent over $1000 on my wife’s teeth when we were married in 1966, but just a few years after she left me in '89, she had to have every tooth in her head pulled.

I have lost my wisdom teeth (some never erupted and I had to get them cut out) and one molar on one side that I had capped 6 years earlier.

Now I have to chew on the wrong side of my mouth until gold or palladium drops in price as I am on disability now. Another tooth needs to be capped to fix the appliance in place for the missing molar. :frowning:

Last year spent $2500 on FOUR teeth. Really. It makes me sick to think about it. But it was either root canals for the upteenth time and new caps or pull 'em and I’m not ready mentally, for dentures

If I ever have to get some sunday-go-to-meetin’-false teeth, I’m gonna get some made outta delrin. Dern if I’m gonna put up with spit stickin’ to 'em.

Is this a dental cost one-upmanship thread? Because having put 4 children through braces (2 phased for 2 of them,) I’ve enriched the orthodontist by approximately $11,000. Having new ones grown in the UK might’ve been more sensible. (They’ve gotten lots of plastic bracelets, bouncy balls, and rubber stretchy men out of the deal—I’m sure it was all worthwhile.)

I wonder what 1996 $1000 compares to in todays dollars. Does anyone know of a conversion site?

I know that a $0.10 candy bar then (price had doubled in 1993 (IIRC) from a nickle) now costs around $0.50 and are much smaller, and my brand new 1966 Volkswagon (my very first new car) was $1275 plus tax and tags. My 12’X60’ with a 7’X14’ extension “mobile home” was $4,000 plus tax and tags.

It took 3 trips from the vehicle to the house to carry in between $10-12 of groceries and now I can carry $50 worth of groceries in one hand.

Can’t quite compete with that, but I wasn’t too thrilled to find that none of the $3200 for my wifes new dentures (went to get 'em installed today) would be covered by our wonderful new guvmint dental insurance. (We couldn’t quite wait till July for it to kick in, as she lost two caps that just wouldn’t stay on, and chewing was becoming very difficult.)

We got a great deal on our younger son back in the mid-70s. After a year of orthodontic work in California, we moved to North Carolina, and our new orthodontist said that if we’d pay for a year’s work in advance, he would finish it regardless of how long it took. We accepted, and it took him a full three years. What a deal! Gotta admit, he kept his word. A great side effect of braces was that the kid became obsessive about keeping his teeth clean. I don’t know if he ever had a cavity after that.

Sounds like you’ve found strength in your old age… and, possibly, larger hands.

What infuriates me  is how they could change the linear measurement scale without telling me about it. 30 years ago in college the tags on my jeans all read “32 x 36”, now it’s “40 x 36”. What’s up with that, anyway?

Steering this thing back on topic, I hate to admit it but teeth is the only thing that certain members of the O’Ban clan have in common with the royal family. This grin doesn’t begin to do us justice…

The predominantly English genes must explain why I’ve had to have a lot of dental work in my time! If I lived over there and got free dental care, I’d certainly take advantage of it. I have an OK dental plan through my work. I’ve had to have a few crowns, but so far no root canals. I’m sure those will come with bifocals in the next 10 years or so, since the big 40 is coming later this year . . .

VB, keep up the informative posts! Those of us with enquireing minds have so much more that we want to know… (such as how to spell “enquiring”).
