Brian~
Im not sure as to where you are getting the track listings from - #2 and #11- but Teampall an Ghleanntain is listed in Ceol Rince na hEireann as,in the first version in Amajor,The Templeglantine reel (a.k.a. Jumping Geordie,The Prince of Wales Fancy and The Popes Toe) also there is a second version in Gmajor with the alternative title - the Maids of Mitchellstown.
An Londubh is the Blackbird and this tune crops up all over the place in various settings.Sometimes it’s a reel or a hornpipe or a setdance and sometimes it is played as an air.

Track listings are directly from the CD: http://www.kittylieover.com also has them.
The first bit of info on track 2 regarding the Templeglantine is helpful. Still unsure as to the origins of the second tune there. As for the tunes from #11, they sound nothing like The Blackbird as I’ve heard it. Any other guesses there as far as other names?
Thanks.
Brian~
Caoimhin did the write up for the tunes and he put in a bit of time getting it right, I discussed things with thim a couple of times while he was working on them.
Teampaill an Ghleanntain is (as the sleevenotes state) 280 in CRE 2, not sure G major would be the best way to describe it.
it shares it’sturn with the maids of mittchellstown but it isn’t the same tune.
Hickey’s is a tune popular in Sliabh Luachra, I think Paddy Cronin used this name, I learned it off a Denis Murphy recording years ago, he called it The Old pensioner, under which name it is also in David Lyth’s book on bowing styles.
Sorry Peter, The CD isn’t mine, but one of the fiddle players at our session ahd given me the questions to ask - so I don’t have the sleeve notes here with me. Also, what is: “280 in CRE 2” I assume a music book? As I don’t read myself, I don’t follow the dot collections at all really. But our Fiddler might benefit from it.
Any further info to be had on The Blackbird set?
Thanks,
B~
If it needs spelling out:
-you were quick t opoint to the tracklistings above, look them up again.
-CRE was referred to above by Dubhlinn.
-blackbird first tune obviously the same one as played by Kevin Burke and the Bothy Band, Dubhlinn above again dealt with that mostly. Second came out of nowhere according again to the sleeve notes.
Yeah, so um…thanks I think.
Let me clarify for you too alrighty?
Settle down boys it’s only monday.
Brian if you click on the link you provided you will find a lot of info underneath the track listings, just scroll down a bit. Most of what I posted is there ,but I did not know that when I posted.
FWIW, most of the tunes i enjoy playing the most I dont know ,or have forgotten, the names.
Slan,
D.
Brian,
The tune that Mick and Kevin play after An Londubh/The Blackbird on track 11 is a Scottish reel called Donald Blue.
The Bothy Band recorded that same version of the Blackbird too. I think there may be some Donegal connection to that version but I’m not 100% sure.

Incidentally, Brian, where did you learn the version of Kitty Lie Over (aka the Frost is all over) you recently posted on clips & snips? Just curious.
Regarding “Teampaill an Ghleanntain”, great tune by the way, after leaving Willie Week in July we headed down to Kerry, making for Ballyferriter. We happened to stop in a small place for chips called “Teampaill a Ghleanntain”. We, fiddle & pipes, play the tune, but no one ever joins in at sessions over here. no one played the tune in at the sessions we attended in Miltown or in Kerry.
