My six-keyed flute is kept in a plastic pistol case, which actually works just fine. But vanity makes me wonder about something a little more stylish. A couple makers offer wooden boxes, but they tend to cost around $200. Same thing with the beautiful Northwind ‘French-style’ cases (and the ones I’ve seen are for one-piece mid-sections, while my flute has a split mid-section). Any ideas for a (cheaper than $200) case that provides good protection for a keyed flute but looks a little more like an instrument case than a tool box?
All my flutes are in modern wood and fabric stuffed cases. Not very beautiful, but very protective. I find them at the maison de la musique ancienne in Paris, for 45 euros. I don’t know the brand, but you can probably ask them. It looks like that.
(BTW, I said that because I assume you are somewhere in Belgium, but I can be wrong of course.

)
Matt, je vis aux Etas-Unis, pas en Belgique (mais je suis Suisse d’origine). That looks like a good case…I wonder if something like that is available in the US. Does ProTec offer any sort of case that would fit a simple system flute?
Cheap pistol cases work great you can can custom cut the egg foam to fit.
Check a sporting goods store.

Eric, a cheap pistol case is what I currently have…just wondering if there’s something more attractive (that doesn’t cost $200).
I had a hard time finding just the “right” case. So I ordered a Protec Flute case and gutted the inside. I then lined it with felt and my keyed Healy fits perfectly!
Under $60 US.
Just a suggestion.
Peach
In the thread of the Sweetheat flute for sale, he has a picture of the Protec case he used-same thing as Peach had done-repadded it to fit.
I believe the scotsman Ormiston used to offer nice wood cases.

Not sure if he still does or not.
Your local woodworking shop is a great place to check, too. These guys are terrific craftsmen who would love the chance to make something as cool as a box custom for a flute.
Mine cost me about $120 and I chose the wood and design ![]()
But for protection…pistol cases are it. You’ll believe when you drop the wood one just once.

You could always paint it or add some glitter…my son claims that makes anything look better. ![]()
Eric
What I don’t get is, well, why want keys on a case?
Jim - Keys on a case make it chrome-atic.

Let’s be sensible.
Locks on a case I can see.
Especially if you have
bagels.
I have a keyed flute as well, and I bought a camera accessories case, which works wonderfully. As well as the pistol case, you still would have to cut out the foam, but I do think it’s more stylish, for everyone seems to complement me on my personalized case. You could probably find them for about $50-80 at a local camera store. And if you would like, some of the cases seem to have two layers of foam which would be superb for different whistles. Good luck!
