Just ordered some Whistles and stuff

I needed a bag for my whistles so I ordered the multi whistle pouch from the whistle stop and while I was there I figured, why not a couple of more cheapies to play with so I tossed a Meg and a LBW on the order as well as the .90 pocket tin whistle songbook that they had. Anyone have any experience with the Meg or the LBW? I’ve been reading the tweek of putting the LBW head on the Feadog body so I figure worse case, I can do that since I don’t like my feadog anyway. As far as the Meg goes, how can you go wrong at $3  WHoA has struck again, at least I don’t have the taste for expensive stuff…Yet

I may never be the best, but I can always be better than I am now!

I have two Megs…a C and a D. The C is great, as far as I can tell (I’m no expert, just a slighty pudgy housewife you know). The lowest fingerhole seems kind of a long way off, if you get my meaning…a bit of a reach for my pinky…but I don’t know if that is a flaw in it or it is just because I’m used to straight bore whistles and it’s a tapered one. Either way, I’ve adjusted to it.

My D just sounds terrible to me. I don’t even know what to do about it, because I’m afraid the mouthpiece just needs adjusting, but when I messed with it, it made it worse. So, I cleaned the mouthpiece with Daken’s solution and put it away till I can get one of the better players in my area to check it and see if they can fix it.

I bought a Meg the moment they were available at the Whistle Shop. I really like it. Mine is essentially a Sweetone. Since then, several people here have said there seems to be a problem with quality control.

When I started playing, I didn’t even like the sound of a Sweetone. I liked the classic Clarke and that was about it. I still prefer that whistle, but now have a true appreciation for a range of whistles. My favorite to date (that I have owned) was a Dixon 1-piece D. Nice whistle. Gave it to a friend. He’s now over a thousand miles away. My favorite ever was probably the Burke AlPro D that ErikT let me play. His own silver whistles were close behind.

I also have Megs in C and D, from the WhistleShop. The C is the better sounding of the two, actually a pretty nice, cheap whistle. The D sounds better when I focus my embouchure. Still, the upper octave tends to break up when playing the higher notes.

I have a Meg in D and it’s pretty much a waste but it was only 3 bucks. I have an LBW also and it’s pretty good for a cheapie.

I have a Meg D that’s a very nice little whistle.

My wife has a LBW but it is squeaky and has burbles. I have a Guinness that was like that until it was heavily tweaked.

Acorn and Clare seem to be your best bet for good-out-of-the-box cheapies right now. Oak is also really good but takes better-than-average breath control.

Best,
