I just got a new Generation Folk D from the Whistle Shop. It looks like it has a new decal different from the picture on the Whistle Shop. I tweaked it with blue sticky stuff and made it tunable. I am just a beginner but it has the great Gen sound and seems to play relatively well. I think I like it more than my Dixon! It seems to have that bright, sprightly tone when you get it going.
So it seems that the rumor about Gen Folk D being of a better quality may be true. YMMV, of course.
It also comes in white, depending on the brand. It’s the sticky putty that’s made for hanging posters, etc.
Cut or tear off a bit of sticky tac and roll a ball of it maybe a little bigger than a pea.
Drop it into the tube end of the mouthpiece (removed from the tube according to the instructions herein: http://www.chiffandfipple.com/tweak.html ) so that it falls into the cavity under the windway.
Tamp it down with something that has a flat end (I use the handle of an exacto knife).
Add more sticky tac until you get the right amount to fill the cavity exactly to the end of the windway.
Make the surface of the filled-in sticky tac as smooth and flat as possible.
Best wishes,
Jerry
P.S. Dale’s tweaking instructions say use beeswax, but sticky tac has superseded beeswax. (Doesn’t melt in a hot car, easier to remove if need be, etc.)
Hey Cran: Don’t worry about that illustration. I am sure it has confused others, including me, the first time I saw it. I kept wondering, what the heck does that do??? Maybe a photo would do a better job, like a true cutaway showing the layers etc.
That sticky stuff is real popular out here in California as you can use it to hold down yer glassware when our earth rocks and rolls. It has different names. I am not sure I have ever seen it called Blue Tack but many on Board refer to it that way. Teachers like it cause they can hang up pictures without stapes or thumbtacks then remove it, tho half the time it does take a few layers of paper with it.
My Gen Folk is my favorite whistle. It has now become such an old friend that everthing else feels alien in my hands. As to them being better than the others, I don’t really think so. I just think Gen has really improved their quality control. I have a red top that sounds just as good.
Funny. When I asked about what blue tack was I didn’t get any cool pictures. All I got was “…do a search…”.
I will admit, Bloom sent me a PM with some pictures on it though.
I just now figured out what that illustration means. All this time I thought the beeswax was supposed to be on the “outside” of the whistle. No wonder I was confused. That didn’t make much sense. Good thing I never tried it.
