Stop me before I ....

Please help me! My bills are all paid, the freezer is stocked and I still have an extra $75 or so. I know I should buy something useful, but are there any whistles in that price range that would be well, you know, er, better than my Generation D?

Tell me this isn’t happening. Stop me before I spend.

Mike

You could always go with a Jerry tweaked generation.

Where can I find info on these?

Thanks,

Mike

I know he sells them on ebay, but they also have them at the whistleshop.

I havent played one of these, but i do have a jerry tweaked sweettone, and it played beautifuly and is well worth the money.

Hi Mike

Sorry to disappoint you in your hour of need, BUT: Tony Dixon’s whistles are really good and well within your budget. My tunable high D is one of my faves! (about $55)

Actually, I only sell tweaked Shaws and tweaked Sweetones on eBay.

Send me a PM or email, and I’ll be happy to send one direct.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Well Folks,

Thanks for the suggestions. Fortunately my wife put an end to my temporary WHOA relapse by announcing when I got home last night that she had found a lamp on sale for $80 that she couldn’t pass up. :sniffle: So it looks like I won’t be able to get a whistle fix until Aug 6th (the next time I’ll have extra money).

At that time I think I’ll go with one of Jerry’s tweaked Generations since I really like the feel and playability of my Generation but it just sounds a little out of tune, particularly the Cnat but maybe that’s just my ear. Anyhow Jerry, I’ll contact you by PM.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, go with Jerry’s tweaked Gen if you want a more stable whistle, but I want to comment on the tuning thing. The cross-fingered (OXXOOO) Cnat on ALL thin-wall-tube whistles (even the handmade ones) is a little sharp, and you have to adjust your breath pressure (lay off a bit) on that note to play it in tune.

Ok Jessie I’ll try that.

Thanks,

Mike

Or you use the accepted fingering: oxxxox

Good point, Bloo.

OXXXOX does seem to give a spot on Cnat. It plays cleanly and it’s easy to finger, especially when running up and down between registers.

Best wishes,
Jerry

OXXXOX seems kind of muffled to me.

I expect it varies from whistle to whistle.

On the tweaked Generation I just tried, OXXXOX is brighter/less muffled than 0XXOOO.

Best wishes,
Jerry

I agree - the Cnat is a bit of sorcery from whistle to whistle. Half the time, my problem is remembering which whistle I’m playing, and what the best Cnat is on that one… from OXXOOO to OXXXXO to OXXXOX to OXXDDO. (as in, shading the fourth and fifth holes to bring “Cnat” in - usually on the bigger whistles, from low C# down to bass A) Let’s hear it for confusion!

On the Feadog C I just tried, I couldn’t notice a muffled difference either. I do think though that there is always a bit of weakness/muffledness in crossfingered C-nats (whether oxxooo, oxxxxo, oxxxox) and that if you want fully clear tone, half-holing is best (which I’ll do on sustained notes).

Amen to the “trying to remember which C-nat goes with which whistle?” thing. I have one (can’t remember which… Hoover Redwood, maybe?) where it comes in best OXOOOO!
