I have a set of drones and regulators made by Kevin Thompson and over the years I’ve played chanters by Bourke, Rowsome and currently I play a Jim Wenham chanter.
In time i will make my own personal set but till then I’d like to complete the set that I have.
So do I
buy a new Thompson chanter
or
try and source Bourke stock, regulators and drones.
I know a Thompson chanter would be a cheaper option but for now lets say that money isn’t and issue.
Having 2 full sets in D would make my job a bit more secure knowing that I do well over 200 gigs a year.
What’s with an all-one-maker set being so great. Why spend the cash? Your combo set probably sounds fine. If you like the sound of it and it is balanced, that is the bottom line. Paddy Keenan is traveling with a frankenset. It sounds great.
If you just want a one-maker set, I would go with option 1, as long as you like Kevin’s chanters.
Ted,
I’m very happy with what I have now. I’m just kinda thinking that it might be nice to have a complete set by one maker. No real reason. Just wishful thinking. By the end of this summer I’ll be playing my own made chanter and drones and I hope to make 2 regulators by winter too.
If the truth be known my 2 favorite pipers played ‘frankensets’. Leo Rowsomes personal set was started by his dad and Ennis’ Coyne set was restored and added to by Brogan.
