Getting regulators from a different maker

I have good 1/2 set that I’am very happy with. My drones and chanter have good tone and balance. They are made by a great maker.
I have a tenor and baritone regulator on order from a different maker because of cost and his work is very good. My only worry is how they will blend with everything else.
I know how much difference reeds can make drones sound in volume and tone.
Can you do this with regs?
How many of you all have different chanter drone or regulator combos?
Thanks for any input

I probably have the most hybrid set of pipes ever;

Chanter: Kevin Thompson
Drones: Eugene Lambe
Regs: Arie De Keyser

Really happy with all three. I have tried Ezee drone reeds (just to see what they were like) but prefer the sound of cane ones. I’ve only tried Arie’s own reeds in my regs. I had him replace the mounts on two of my drones in order to match the mounts on the regs.

There’s a lot of scope to alter the tone & volume of a regulator by adjusting a reed in the same way a chanter reed would be adjusted.

Me frankenset, too:

C set with:
Chanter Wooff
Drones McNicholl
Regs Rogge

which certainly sounds like a gamble, as Wooff and Rogge have very different approaches towards flat sets. But said that, reeding can do very much to equal out the differences. I had to mute the reg reeds a bit and now I’m a happy camper.
As for concert sets, I guess they are even easier to deal with.

Yes.

Yes
My 1/2 set is Ray Sloan. My Regs are being made by B.C. Childress.
I have been playing the uilleann for a few years on and off. Just this past year I have been really studying really hard. I went to the Upper Potomac weekend with Elliott Grasso, and Jerry O’ Sullivan last year. That really got me working hard. I have been piping for 18 years on the war pipe and SSP. So now I pipe even more now than before, if that is possible. :astonished:
I have a weekly session that keeps me learning tunes. I love it.
I dream that my first tune with the regs will be Clare’s Dragoons. I love how Leo Rowsome plays it. Then I want to learn the set that Tianran plays on youtube.
My regulators should be ready in April this year.

Keep it going, and more power to your elbow!

I’m not too far behind you Padraic.

Chanter: Johnny Bourke
Drones: Originally they were a Rowsome set that Kevin Thompson restored/rebuilt and Dave Boisvert rebuilt a few bits a few years ago too.
Regulators: Kevin Thompson.

You’ll only ever have trouble if you have huge wide bore drones and a narrow bore chanter. Then the air requirements will be different.
If anyone ends up with such a frankenset I’d recommend honing your reed making skills!

Tommy

I should add that my bellows are made by Jim Schaefer. They are awsome. So that would be three different makers. Sloan,Childress, and Schaefer. Sounds like a good match.
