I’m not familiar with the melody, so I don’t know whether this is the one you’re looking for:
Are you a piper?
You know, if you post an abc file in the key of D you have to disable the smilies or you get this: ![]()
Dark Lochnagar is certainly a gorgeous slow air and I’m going to have to make a stab at transcribing it one of these days. I found this abc version on
JC’s tune finder site, but it really isn’t close to the JOBM version.

Hi Folks,
I’ve been wondering about JOBM’s tune Dark Lochnagar, great, but not the same as the version I know. They must be 2 different tunes. The version I know is here http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/scottish/awayyega.htm
Lochnagar (in the above song) is a mountain in Scotland near Braemar.
Cheers, Mac
MacEachain, there are indeed two entirely different tunes.
I went to the Mudcat in search of the words of the one that pipers play ( see thread here), and that confirmed that there are two different tunes. The reason why I was looking for the words was that the pipers’ versions have become so ornate that you can’t identify the underlying tune any more.
After exhaustive listening to the different recordings mentioned, and without disrespect to the various others who recorded the air, I came to the conclusion that the Willie Clancy one is the only reliable one for phrasing, and probably the ultimate source for all the others. That was the version which I learned by ear, but I never saw it written down or got words for it.
Hi Roger,
thanks for the information, by the way, which Willie Clancy CD is the tune on?
Cheers, Mac
The tune is on “The Drones and the Chanters” volume 1, track #19.
