Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson, flutes, whistles and midi help

Hey is this a specific subject line or what? I came across the official Jethro Tull website while looking for the tune “Thick as A Brick”. It is being featured in a car commercial. I was working on supper with the t.v. on and the tune made me prick up my ears. Took me a second or two to fiqure it out. It sounded so like Ian Anderson’s playing that I was sure it must be him. Went to the website and sure enough it is. He talks about doing the tune himself because he didn’t want any one else mucking it up.

Under the equipment section of the site he talks abouts the instruments he plays, one of which is the tin whistle, and how he came about playing the flute. He has some good advice for beginners and some technical info. You might enjoy a trip to the site.

I didn’t get the tune I was looking for though. I found a few sites that had the midi but since I upgraded from Window’s 95 to 98 I seem to have lost the ability to grab midis. I used to just right click on them and save them. Now the quick time symbol come up and clicking does nothing. Can anyone help a computer challanged rodent?

Mary

My first attempt would be to muck about in the file associations in your browser. Tell it not to automatically associate *.mid files with quicktime. If that doesn’t work, I would uninstall quicktime and reinstall it, hoping for a screen that asks “what files would you like to associate with Quicktime?”

Further adventures in computing.

Well I tried mucking about in the file options thingy and got nowhere. So I uninstalled Quicktime. Didn’t have it before don’t really feel I need it now. Still couldn’t click on a player while it was playing and capture the midi. Well just started clicking around. Turns out now that if I right click on the TITLE before getting the midi to play I can save the midi. Go figure. So I thought heck might as well just reinstall Quicktime. Went to the trash bin and it’s gone. Just gone. That must be a new doohickey of Window’s 98. Oh well. Midis still play so…whatever.

Thanks for the help Avanturia.

No problem. If you want quicktime back go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

Mary,
It’s frustrating when every player you install wants to become the default program and re-assign your file associations.
Sometimes it’s just easier to right click, save the file, then open a directory where you saved the file to and drag & drop it on the icon of the player you choose from your desktop.
I have icons of Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Windows sound recorder & RealPlayer… This way, I don’t have to bother with changing file assignments.

I think I have seen that car commerical. Is it the one where everyone is chasing the car through a quant town? If it is I actually wanted to post a question about what the tune was. so if you find could you please post where you found it?

This just doesn’t seem to be my night. Tried to reload Quicktime from the site you mentioned Avanturia, I found it doing a search. But my firewall and it weren’t getting along. I’m going to retry. While messing around with this I found the tuning slide on my whistle is stuck. I did get some instructions on fixing this from the Copeland site and will have to do that next. But on the plus side…

LKtz here is a site that has the midi…

If you have a program for notating midis it probably isn’t what you’re looking for. It’s very rich and well done but way more than the simple melody a whistle player is looking for. But play it anyway it’s really nice.

Mary the messed up (at the moment) mouse

Aaaack! I give. I’ve lived without Quicktime before I can do it again. At least I got my head joint loosened. I see I need some serious cleaning in this whistle! Maybe I can get something right tonight.

That midi worked for me. It went to my, “Real Download”, first then it asked me if I wanted to RUN it. I clicked yes. It started to play on my,Winamp. Good Luck! P
