Backing Tracks - midi

I was looking to do a bit of whistle practice and perhaps even record some of my efforts. I play along with midi files with Van Basco’s Midi player which is great for transposing and tempo changes - thank you whoever put me on to that on this board. But, the midi files still sound very computer generated. (yes, I know that that’s what a midi file is… )Now my question is, does anyone have any suggestion for improving the sound quality of my midi files. I do not have a keyboard/synth and use my pc connected to some good speakers. A new sound card is not really an option and nor is buying a keyboard. I found a link to a softsynth at Yamaha that many people were raving about and how it transformed the midi’s into real lifelike tracks. The link is no longer available :frowning: I did a search on chiff&fipple but found nothing that really got to what I am after. Would cakewalk do it? does anyone have any suggestions for me, I am rather ignorant in this area, so any advice would be welcome.
Thanks
Ian

Hi Impempe.
The Yamaha homepage seems to be closed for some works at the moment. I don’t know if you are running Windows XP on your computer. If so, you could download Yamaha Softsynth S-YXG50 Ver4 Windows XP from this site.

If not I think you have to be patient until the Yamaha homepage opens again.

Hey thanks Silvano, that is exactly what I was after, I am running XP and am busy trying to download it now. There seems to be a bit of a glitch, but will keep on trying.

Thanks for the response
Ian

You are welcome. I hope it works.
