I’m a long-time lurker and have enjoyed all of the knowledge you’ve shared on this forum. Maybe someone can help me.
Here’s my question: Does anyone know if any prints exist of JB Vallely’s work? Especially the painging on the cover of Na Connerys “The Session.” I’ve Googled and checked on e-bay, and it seems that only originals are available. While I’d love to collect his actual art, I’m not that wealthy!
About five years ago I bought two JB Vallely prints through his website. At the time they had a small catalog showing the paintings for which prints were available. There were only around 30 or 40 of them, not all from his musicians series - about half of them were of other subjects, like sports which apparently is another subject he focuses on in his art. I was surprised to learn at the time how prolific the man is. He has done thousands of paintings in his career.
The catalog I bought from and the associated prints were apparently put together in conjunction with a retrospective book documenting his career as an artist. From looking at his website now, it seems that the book is still available and perhaps even a few of the prints, but obviously not the full catalog I was able to choose from when I bought. Even then, though, my choice was limited to just those paintings that had been chosen to be part of that catalog, not every painting he had ever done (such as the CD cover art, of which he has done a good bit besides the Na Connerys one you mentioned). So it might be very difficult for you to find a print of that specific painting. But check out what he does have available from his site - it’s all very nice work.
Yes, I believe Brian Vallely’s early work focused on Gaelic sports (hurlers & footballers). Musicians became his subjects later, which is hardly surprising given the number of musicians in his own family. He is a prolific and highly regarded artist. He also, together with his wife Eithne, runs the Armagh pipers club which has produced many of the fine musicians from the region over the years.
