James Goodman article

I found a book in the Laval University Library called Irish Folk Music and Song by Donal O’Sullivan, illustrations by Muriel Brandt. It was published by Colm O’Lochlainn/Three Candles in 1952.

The book contains 3 pages on Canon James Goodman, including one sketch.

I’ve only got it in PDF but if anyone wants it, PM me your email address. Alternatively, if someone can convert it to jpeg or gif it could be posted here.

Patrick D’Arcy has kindly offered to post the article on his website:

Hi Pat,

This is up on the website now under the news section on the first page.

Nice bit of history.

PD.

Thanks Pat and PJ…

Are those the correct two pages? The Goodman material seems to start and end abruptly in mid-paragraph… (I think we’re missing pages 25 and 27)

The pages begin in the middle of an article about someone named Pigot, then go on to the Goodman article, then continues halfway into a third article about someone named Patrick Weston Joyce. The names are indented at the beginning of each article instead of a clear break in the text. I guess it can be a bit confusing.

That’s correct. I probably shouldn’t have referred to an article in the title to this post. It’s more an extract from a chapter in a book.

I suspect that the sketch isn’t contemporary to Goodman but rather from the early 1950s.

Does anyone know about the author - Donal O’Sullivan (not to be confused with O’Sullivan the Great!!)

I have a 2-volume biography-and-music collection called Carolan - The Life, Times, and Music of an Irish Harper that he published in 1958.
