Ivory Importation

Say one were to acquire a second-hand set that had ivory mounts. These would have to be shipped from the UK to California. I’ve looked up info on this matter in the archives, but did not find quite the answer I was looking for. Would I, the recipient, have to have a CITES certificate for the ivory on the pipes even though no documentation exists for the ivory with the owner in the UK? I’ve never dealt with the whole Customs thing and their site is confusing as all hell. Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Not knowing much about pipemaking, I’m curious about the feasibility of the pipemaker removing the ivory and replacing it with, say, boxwood.

In Australia it depends on when the item was made. If it was made before the dates of certificates and tracking of ivory. The set is allowed in. However you do have to have a document sertifying the approximate age of the set ([example]within five years) date in which the set was made/produced.

My best suggestion is that you ring the customs agent in your area. I’m sure they’ll be very helpfull and appreciate that your abiding by the rules.

It’s possible, but to be honest, why would someone want to ruin a bit of history, or at least, some nice turning?

This has come up several times. I can’t remember all the details as I was not personally motivated to learn it all, but there are definitely restrictions, but also some allowances too, depending on the age of the ivory. Perhaps a Search would bring up the relevant threads with the details.

well, not necessarily ruining artwork. More like recycling it, I guess, so that someone else may be able to enjoy it on their set, in case one may not be able to get ivory.

Well, I wouldn’t be getting it from a maker, so unfortunately that option is not gonna work. Any one had any experience with Customs on this sorta thing?

yea all i know is make sure you got a certificate sayin its antique, cuz other wise they haul off and says its illiagal
