In search of a good flute

Hello, all!

I’m a newcomer to the site and have really enjoyed reading your posts. I’ve been studying Irish traditional flute with Niall Keegan this semester at the Irish World Music Center in Limerick, Ireland. Normally, I’m a singer, but I realized how much I miss playing, and I’m in the market for a good, used keyless wooden flute. A tuning slide is a must, but I’m not too picky about the wood type. I’ve been playing on a lovely Eamon Cotter keyless all semester that I borrowed from Niall, and it’s breaking my heart to part with it. Would anyone out there happen to have an Eamon Cotter, or should I just bite the bullet and contact the man himself?

Thanks a million! I look forward to hearing from you!

Cotter flutes seem to be about as scarce as hens teeth here in the U.S…

When you find three Cotter’s…you keep one and let Loren and know about the other 2!

Hey folks -
I’m not quite sure what the “Where can I get a Cotter?” mystery is. I played a few in Ireland. They were superb. The price was reasonable, as was the waitlist. If you want a Cotter, just contact Eamonn directly and get on his waiting list. By the way, Kevin Crawford told me thinks Cotter makes the best unkeyed flutes around (he prefers Grinter for keyed flutes). Remember, that’s just one musician’s opinion and I don’t necesarily stand by it, but that is what he said.
Best,
Chris

G.,

Right on Man!! We’ll take the other two

Chris,

Well…I tried to get a Cotter flute before I heard about Dave Copley. As I recall only info I could find for Mr. Cotter was an e-mail contact who promised to forward my request to Mr. Cotter. Unfortunately I never heard back from anyone one after that :frowning:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any other way to make contact at that time (about a year ago), so eventually I gave up and bought something else instead.

That’s where my comment comes from, I’m sure there must be others who have had better luck.

Loren -
Gotcha. I’ll see what I can come up with.

To those in the know,

What kind of design does Cotter use: a large hole/Pratten-style, a smaller hole R&R, or something of his own design? Are the finger holes all on one section (a la Pratten), or can the right and left hand holes be turned independantly?

Thanks in advance for your answer!

P.S. Oh, and how do you contact Eammon?

This is just a shot in the dark but has anyone tried asking Ciaran Cotter of The Knotted Chord?
