I placed an order for a Burke Brass High D Session whistle on the 7th of August and today, just nine days later, it arrived in the post in the UK.
The whistle is absolutely superb and the service could not possibly be bettered.
I am one very happy whistler. ![]()
Burkes are just FINE! They are “friendly” whistles in a harsh world. If there WERE Hobbits, they would play Burkes.
Maybe I am a hobbit. At least our Kurt Nilsen is. ![]()
If true, I too am a Hobbit…
Best.

Me no Hobbit.
Me VIPER!!!
In Burkeland, A Viper is just a big old Hobbit!

Verily, verily…So true, Philo…

I don’t think hobbits would play Burkes…they are too industrial in appearance. I think Hobbits would play those bark-covered whistles that Colin and Brigitte found.
Strange, but the one that I was honored by hobbit Tom Dowglowings to play, was engraved mysteriously with “GTW fka GTG.” ![]()

Or perhaps a sturdy wood O’Riordan. There’s a whistle I haven’t yet played, but would sure love to try. ![]()
The Burke is a forest creature that has evolved over millenia to quietly occupy every nook and hilltop, hiding from overt scrutiny.
Who can say? Was it a Magic Gen, a Burke or a mystic emanation of the Muse’s soul?
Who cares what arcane majicks enable this feat, so long as the feets are large!
By the number of Burkes sold on this site, I’d say that more are at large than are said!

I play 4 keys of low whistle. D, Eb, E, and F. As well as at home, I love to play in the forest, by the lake, along the river. Acoustics!
I play the most beautiful melodies I can…and get into dreaming out loud through these great whistles.
My Burkes willingly go where I dream. How I love that they allow for strong playing in the upper register! Rolling around up into the third octave, and then plunging into a solid footing down below. Great!
They may be a bit “gleaming-industrial” on the surface…but I’ve grown to really appreciate Mike’s work…strong, pure, accomodating, easy to play, a full range of notes, IN TUNE from top to bottom, etc etc. Top notch. I don’t leave home without 'em.
My Burke Brass Sessions Sop. D I bought in 2003 (I think) cured me of WhOA- haven’t felt the need to get another since.
