Hello, Forgive me if this an inapropriate post, but I am in deep want of a set of drones for my practice set. I have been playing on a friends set for the last few months while in FL but now I am in VA and haven’t played in a while. I have ordered a practice set form Chris Dixon and expect it to arrive in the next week. I REALLY want a set of drones for these. If any one out there has a set of drones they are willing to sell (or rent/lone for a while) I would love to talk to you about them. Let me know if ya’ll have any suggestions. Oh, and I always enjoy the posts, both the informative and the esoteric. Thanks,
Oh, and also, I have had the opportunity to play a half set once and it was addictive! So much more fulfilling than a chanter alone. Wow, these things are powerfull!
You might want to consider David Dayes drones. For less than $600 you get drones that work and sound very well. The only downside is that you cannot add regulators. But it is a great place to start. http://daye1.com/pennychanter.html
Patrick Sky also makes drones for budget sets. It really depends on how strapped for cash you are. Another alternative is to practise circular breathing and get a kazoo.
Thanks for the suggestions. I am considering David Dayes drones, but I would like the ability to add drones; also he is not currently taking orders, and his wait is still about 5 weeks. I am also considering a set that David Boisvert has on his site (thanks Joseph). I am perhaps a little too impatient. Maybe I should just get on the waiting list of a good maker. I do not have much eqperience with drones but would like a set that has a nice full deep sound, not buzzy. If anyone has suggestions about a good maker, with a wait time that is not too long, and makes good sounding drones, I am all ears.
David Boisvert is a great pipemaker. Although his wait list is a year or so, you will find it is a reasonably short time for a great set of pipes. Seth Gallagher has a wait list of ten months (last time I checked), but his pipes are too steep a price for me at this time.
Expect to wait for a good set of pipes to be made for you. If you cannot wait, keep an eye on eBay, a good set usually turns up before too long.
Thanks for the MP3 suggestion, I have thought of trying that, or maybe the pipe organ at church. But part o the reason I want a real set of drones is to get the feel of playing with them, pressure, air requirments, holding them, etc. It really is about the whole eqperience, but for the time being I my try something along those lines.
