I was just looking at the list of pipemakers and I was astounded to see that Hubert Kwisthout lives in my hometown of Penarth in Wales (wrongly listed as England by the NPU.) Judging by his address he lives about 20 minutes walk from my parents’ house. I’m also surprised to see that there are three other uilleann pipemakers in Wales, particularly since the instrument is almost unknown there.
Hubert Kwisthout, I would have thought (not Herbert).
Is he still making pipes? I interviewed him in the very early 1990s when he was launching a sustainable forestry/wood products initiative and he said at that point that he “used to make” uilleann pipes but didn’t any longer. Maybe he has since started up again?
As far as I can see, he’s working on sustainable forestry now. But it’s exciting for me to see that there’s someone involved with piping in my hometown.
