…I’m back.
Ive been back since last saturday afternoon but for reasons above and beyond my comprehension, the PC had shut itself down during my holiday. The Geek was with me on saturday and soon got it all together again apart from one little detail.
The disc containing the software needed to kick start the modem/internet connection was missing!!!
Now I never touch anything techie so I can only assume that he took it with him after the last bout of Geekism and then lost it so I had to phone my ISP and request a new disc which arrived about twenty minutes ago and here I am..at last…back home on the Chiffboard
I gotta go to work this afternoon and then there is a huge amount of threads to catch up on but normal service should be resumed by the weekend so if anybody wants to delete anything…now is your chance.
I had a similar thought. I know I never use the software that comes
with RoadRunner. Though, if using something like AOL, one might
need extra software to logon.
The software situation was that when the PC shut down,it deleted the modem program and it needed to be reinstalled. Now that it is reinstalled it is only one click and I’m online.
I will have to make further inquires into this “Bester” business as not one single person I met up with in Dublin had any interest in ITM.It’s always been like that in my little circle of family and friends…More anon.
“Bester” is a derogatory term for someone who always has to have the last word in an argument and generally wants to get the better of everyone, with a hint that he is willing to do so by fair means or foul.
An uncle of mine (born Dublin circa 1913) used to use the expression. It may be specific to Dublin or Ireland.
Fair play to ye Roger,
Meself and Nano have been trying to get a handle on that one for a while now.I never heard the term outside of a Frank Harte song “The Charladies Ball” which was written by Jimmy O’Dea, who was born in Dublin in 1899.This would suggest to me that the expression was of that generation and has passed into disuse in Dublin vernacular.
