Lignum is not the hardest of woods (sg 1.2) Partridgewood, Snakewood, Cooktown Ironwood for example are the same if not denser.

My first chanter was made from lignum by Peter Hunter.

It was a great little beast, but I found it marked very easily so eventually I kept it in a highland pipe chanter case.

I remember reading that lignum is now listed by CITES as endangered.

It’s listed in Appendix II of CITES - so not as restricted in trade as Appendix I materials such as Brazilian Rosewood or elephant ivory. At present finished items made of lignum vitae (guaiacum spp.) don’t require CITES permits, for instance. Trade in logs and timber is still possible, but permits are required for that.
