Can anyone tell me why the green topped Generations are more expensive than the others?
So people can pay more for them.
Generally speaking, the more of an item that is manufactured, the cheaper they are. The fewer they make, the more they charge. Green tops aren’t as popular, so they don’t make as many, so they charge a little extra.
There’s no way I can tell for sure, but it seems like the quality control may be better on the green tops. At least that has been my experience. Otherwise there are no significant differences between the current red, blue, and green top Gens.
Strange, I hadn’t even noticed the price of green top Generations had gone up.
When Thom first started stocking them at The Whistle Shop they were cheaper than either the blue top or the red top.
I can personally attest to the fact that the green tops are usually of better quality… either that or I’ve just been very lucky with the ones I’ve bought.
Hi Raindog,How many greentops have you bought(or put another way,how many greentops do you NEED)? I bought a greentop about a year ago, even though i have a perfectly serviceable redtop, because i’d never seen one before. The head is o.k.,but the hole finish was pretty rough and ready, but it was the only one in the shop,so i snapped it up like it was some rare artifact! It could still do with a bit of cleaning up.
According to Generation, the green top ones are “folk whistles,” whereas the traditional red and blue top ones are “flageolets,” thus the price difference is quite understandable. Doesn’t “folk whistle” sound so much pleasanter than “flageolet,” which reminds one of the flagellations so common in Mediæval monasteries? It is commonly speculated that the green ones represent Generation’s higher quality production.

As usual, Mr. Walden, your observations are quite appropriate, and almost plausible.

Since they were the cheapest whistle at the time (which was before the Meg), I bought a few of them to keep handy for people who showed an interest in whistle playing.
I gave a few away and sold the rest, but I tried them all out first to make sure there were no unplayable ones in the bunch… never found one.
Raindog-kindly giving them away to whistle newbies is the best answer anyone could possibly give! Hey,WAIT a minute, isn’t that a bit like a DRUGPUSHER giving you your first ‘hit’ free? DON’T EXCEPT THESE WHISTLES FOLKS!WHOA BECKONS! YOUR ALL DOOMED!!
Hmmm…
I have a full (I thought) collection of Generation whistles, but now I find out there are Grenn ones, too? WhOA!!!

It’s a nice thought, but I think your warning is probably wasted on people on this board.

You are right,Snuh,-I think it’s called ‘The blind leading the blind’!
I got a green top for the fipple only, tweeked it by filling the space with blue goop and threw away the tube and then put the fipple on my old tube and Mick Woodruff says it’s one of the best he’s ever
played! That’s what green tops are for!
