Has any one tried the Generation soprano d with the green top. Not the folk whistle. This one has a green head, and the tone tube has the same style sticker as the red top whistle. This whistle seems to play better than the other so I looked at it real close. After removing the head and the excess plastic I found that the windway exit is smaller than all my red top Gens. The only other whistle I have seen with this smaller exit is Feadog. (Feadog is the same as Feadog) This is like a tapered windway, and the playing differance is quite noticeable. Of course it still sounds like a Gen but it feels more effective, and plays with ease up into the higer notes. Did they make a new mold, and do the red tops also have this taper?
I just saw one of these on eBay and the only thing that stopped me from bidding was not having paypal. If the seller accepted money orders I’d have already bid. I have a vicious case of WhOA!! I’m gonna guess that these are a recent product of Generation and hopefully I’ll get my chance soon.
I have a few Gens that I’m really fond of…particularly my F and G…fantastic little players. I think I’ll play them right now…lol
I’ve got a collection of blue-top Generations, and recently acquired a green-top D (not the folk brass, but the one mentioned in this post) as part of a bundle bought off a C&F member.
I can’t actually see any noticeable difference between the mouthpieces. Certainly the sound is brighter and sweeter, but perhaps that’s the metal body. I don’t have any red-tops to compare the sound to…
I find the windway exit on both whistles to be a tight .048 inches.
What I did notice is that the green Generation whistlehead had a thin ridge of flashing sticking up at the exit end of the windway that may have made it look like the windway exit was cast to a different dimension than the redtop.
It’s my opinion that these are from the same tooling, but at different times during the life of the molds, so there will be different amounts of wear on the tooling in each example, creating different irregularities.
