Whaa…£700?! I think I will have a go at cleaning it (can’t go too wrong there, can you?) but will avoid the pads, I will just have to suffer

Done with due, methodical care and caution, stripping and reassembling a Bohm flute is easy enough and doesn’t need any/much specialist tooling. The wood can be cleaned with meths and cotton rags and then oiled with bore oil and the mechanism and other silverware can be cleaned with a silver cloth and/or silver wadding for more stubborn tarnish - just avoid getting the polish onto the pads. You can even contrive a simple pad iron from a repair washer. The pads can be cleaned with a damp Q-tip using either water or perhaps surgical spirits. As long as there are no cracks in the wood or damaged pads, you’ll be fine with patience. You may find the regulation (key action) is out, most likely due to missing or compressed kicker and buffer corks; that’s a little fiddlier to deal with, but still not hi-tech or conceptually difficult - but that’s the last stage. Try to avoid having to remove the pads - cleaning the silver would be easier with them out, but re-padding (whether re-using the originals or using new) Böhm flutes opens a whole different level of heartache and frustration.

Well I’ll have a go sometime, not sure I will succeed, but I’ll tell you the results. I think I will show the flute to my teacher and see what she thinks actually needs to be done about the pads as she is a lot more experienced than me.
If I’m right and they are leather, if undamaged they can probably be revived in a way impossible with skin pads and Chris Wilkes (who recently worked on my Radcliff System RC for me) tells me that these flutes work (seal) far better with the original type of pad (not available today unless you can make your own!). Do ask for advice if/when you decide to tackle it.
