I must say that I find the following, not alone’s, post both hurtful and offensive.
Finding myself with several whistles I no longer use I decided to offer them here, as opposed to giving them to the local charity shop, my reasons for this was partly in acknowledgement of the genorisity of the board members in giving of their time and knowledge but also in the hope that I could assist someone who is unable to access whistles themselves.
Having just found gainful employment, having been unemployed for over 5 months, I know how difficult it can be to find money for “unnecessary” pursuits.
To be told how much,of the little money I have, I should spend on postage by someone who has no idea of my circumstances is totally unacceptable.
I really wish I hadn’t bothered and no longer have any desire to be part of this board; so I will take this opportunity to say thank you for all I have learnt from many of you and goodbye to all of you.
Airmail letter post for a whistle anywhere in the world isn’t very expensive. You might consider sending one to Chile. Since it’s a gift with very little monetary value, customs shouldn’t be an issue.
As far as I can tell, Go strangely (what’s in a name) stating clearly he was willing to send free whistles to the UK only and not enjoying being told he shouldn’t fuss over it and send them anywhere regardless.
For the record, in the original post which has since been edited, they were offering their unused whistles gratis to anyone in the UK. Jerry mentioned it’s not a lot more to send international (at least from here in the US) in case the poster wasn’t aware of that. Oops! I hope they realize that no harm or snarkyness was intended.
We see a lot of cases where people for all sort of seemingly irrational reasons refuse to sell and send instruments outside the US. Here we have a case of someone kindly offering to send free whistles within the UK.
People set their own terms for their own reasons. And sometimes they over-react when questioned.
I think the point has been missed here. He was offering to send free whistles to people in the UK who could not afford to buy them for themselves. He said he has only just found a job after 5 months of being broke. I think I would want to keep my personal expence down as well.
It was a very generous offer towards those he felt the most affinity for i.e poor people.
Poms do tend to be touchy and they’re feelings easily hurt though.
It’s all a huge storm in a tiny little thimble full of tea but we’ve gone through this type of discussion before with people who adamantly refuse to send anything outside the US (which is a more common occurrence here, the hordes are afterall lurking at the borders, either waiting to get in or otherwise to steal and maltreat anyone or anything that gets out) and each has their own reason for these things, something we have to accept.
I can imagine that must be extremely annoying if you live outside the U.S. I think many people don’t realize how easy and inexpensive it can be to send a whistle anywhere in the world.
If the whistle is an item for sale, it may be more complicated to send it outside the country, and the cost of postage may not be the only issue, but that wouldn’t be a factor in this case, as I tried to point out.
Australia and England must have been at war with each other for years then. I’ve heard many a pom refer to Australians as Colonials, and even off spring of convicts. I don’t take it to heart, My father was a Welshman (Don’t the English refer to them as sheep f**kers?!), I’m first generation Australian, so as far as I’m concerned it’s all water under the bridge. I also think that to take offence is not an emotional thing but a choice freely made by the person offended. I personally choose not to be offended, but I reserve the right to explain myself as I have in all of the above.
