Good luck to all chiffers competing in the All Ireland

Just to wish any chiffer competing at Tullamore this year good luck.

David

Indeed! Rock on, y’all!

Let’s see … a few chiffers I know of who should be there …

Josh Dukes and the Old Bay Ceili Band crew
Joey Abarta (SCUPC)
George Grasso & Owen Meehan – Santa Cruz area, CA
Nico Moreno? (don’t know if Nic was going or not)

Thanks for thinking of that, Davy.

Hi Cathy

I was talking to Josh Dukes just before the bodhran competition, he seems like a nice guy and he has a nice, if a little unusual, style of bodhran playing. The ones at the back second guessing the ajudicators (including me and another two competing against him) were expecting him to be in 3rd place, and were pretty surprised when he didn’t place.

David

Edited to say well done to Josh on winning the Accompaniment title.

I just heard about Josh’s win – that’s great news (bummer about the bodhran placings, though >:( )

! I heard the Old Bay Ceili Band rocked the house, too. Hey, we do what we can here in the Yoosa.

Thanks again for the post and the good thoughts for our fellow chiffers.

All-Ireland Chiffers and friends:

Martino Vacca: 1st place, senior uillean pipes
Martino Vacca: 1st place, senior uilleann slow airs
Joey Abarta: 2nd place, senior uilleann pipes
Owen Meehan: 1st place, 15-18 whistle
Josh Dukes: 1st place, senior accompaniment

Congratulations all!

(Feel free to add more if I’ve overlooked any.)

Added: Martino Vacca (The Dark Apprentice)

I came last or second to last in the piping! Not sure which but it was richly deserved.I think a motorway pile up would have sounded more musical than my contribution to the days entertainment.

Hi Uilliam

You were not the only one that made a pigs ear of your competition

David

At least y’all qualified!

Our goal in Duets at the Midwest Fleadh was to not throw up on the judge. We achieved that, at least. (We are so clueless!)

Not throwing up is a good goal. As an added benefit, you also played nicely!

Thanks, Nico. And it was a real honor to hear you guys.

It was a full day Davey and thanks for the compliment. It was fun to do and all in all, I had a fun time doing it. Will probably just do the ceili band comp next year if we qualify because it was allot to handle in one day. Congrats to the others who placed. I wish I had a chance to see them all over there. Joey was the only one that I saw and that was pretty short lived. Next year it looks as if Cavan will be the place for the Fleadh. Big difference from Tully Town.

Hi Josh

Well you had your work cut out for you   but don’t give up on the bodhran as I want to listen to you competing again next year. I take it you will be defending your accompaniment title?

David

Here is one o the things that was put on,now then if there where 2700 musicians playing at that gig then I didnae see or hear them.Just look at the ratio of spectators to musos in the clip.I am 3rd left 25th row back.

Uilliam

How long did it take them to tune?

Ha! There’s a fellow I know, a fiddler, up in the front area. At around 4.09-ish you can see him digging into his pocket. Must’ve been searching for the tune.

He looks as tho he is dipping the pockets o the guy in front o him wi the colourful westcoat on
Uilliam

Could be! He was, as they say, “between jobs” at the time. Why, I’ll have to ask, now, won’t I.
