Going to England

I’m going to be in England in a couple weeks, in Durham and South Wales (in or near Chepstow, I think). Of course I’m hauling the pipes along looking for sessions or any other Irish music things. If anyone knows of anything, let me know. I’ll be in the UK from the April 1st to April 15th. I’m in Wales the first week and Durham the second.

I’m a native of Durham, although I have lived abroad for nearly ten years. The Colpitts Hotel was the main Irish session in Durham, but I saw a thread on Session.org that said music was not played there anymore.

Joe Crane was the local Uilleann man, but he was also always difficult to contact.

If you have time, I suggest that you take a journey to the Chantry Bagpipe Museum in Morpeth, Northumberland. I used to play there with a group of pipers every month. I doubt the monthly sessions are still happening, but the museum is worth a look and you may be allowed to get your pipes out and play for a while.

Anne Moore at the Chantry museum shouldbe able to give you some information.

Folkworks are also a useful source of info for the traditional music scene in the North East.

They run a database of local music events.
