I’ve been lurkin the board for quite a while now, and this will be my first started topic. Anywho,
This summer (June 22-July 4) my high school’s jazz band will be going to Australia ( 
)(Sydney, Melbourne, Bathurst) and in the little free time I’ll be having, I want to check out some local Celtic scene. Anybody wanna suggest places (Pubs, concerts, music stores, anything…)? Thanks in Advance

The one spot I know is/was Molly Malone’s Bar on George Street in The Rocks in Sydney, then Tue nights and Sat afternoons (very close to the harbour, western side). Haven’t been there for seven years, but it’s probably still going.
If Wombat’s around, he may know a spot or two. Brizzie and Bathurst I don’t know - Bris should have something, but I’d be very surprised if Bathurst does.
BTW, rug up - Oz may be great in summer, but it’s not hot all year round and you’re going in the depths of winter. It will feel cold at night (c.4C/39F), though daytime will be 15-18C/55-65F. Bathurst’s inland and may be sub-zero at night.

I live in Wollongong (believe it or not) which is about 50 miles south of Sydney. I don’t think there are regular sessions here and don’t know about Sydney. I know lots of folk musicians loclly and in Melboure, Canberra and Sydney and the rural areas in between. We know eachother but rarely get together for sessions. Distance is a problem as are professional commitments. Professional musicans are too busy touring to attend sessions regularly. I have several friends in Wollongong who play Irish music but we never seem to manage to get together for sessions. Same goes for my friends who play in other styles.
I know there are sessions in Melbourne, friends of mine attended one recently. I’ll try to track down details. Let me know closer to your time of departure and I’ll have an update for you.
I know for sure that we’ll have time in sydney to explore The Rocks, so I’ll be sure to check out Molly Malone’s. I figured it’d get cold, which is fine for me (getting tired of the California-esque weather everywhere). Wombat, I’ll PM or e-mail when all the details are finalized.
